maybe it's just me, but i missed the HASS-D lottery deadline. yeah, i know it's a little late to realize it but i've been in asia for the past month and a half and just came back from a week trip to korea. thus, i haven't quite been on top of all my college things. i was wondering how necessary it is to enter the lottery and if it is possible to still enter? also, does this mean i cannot take a HASS-D course my entire freshman year or just for the fall term? in other words, what's the best course of action now that i have already been stupid and missed the deadline?

Don't worry. I did the same thing, three years ago. When you're registering for classes, your advisor will probably have a list of HASS-Ds that still have open spots. Choose a few that look interesting, go to their first class meetings with an add form, and ask the prof if they have room for another student in the class. If so, get them (and your advisor) to sign the add form, turn it in to the registrar, and you're in the class. If not, try the same thing with the next class you were looking at. You can get add forms outside the Student Services Center, on the first floor of building 11.

And there will be plenty of classes with open spots, so don't worry.

The HASS-D lottery isn't a necessity -- my boyfriend has taken three HASS-D's so far, and he's never been lotteried into one.

the hass-d lottery is one of the dumber things at mit

Thanks! That's really reassuring...:)

I did the same thing - I was in Europe for a month, and missed the deadline, but I just emailed the HASS office with my choices and they put me in the lottery anyway.

This might be a stupid question, but... do prefrosh have to make their HASS-D lottery submissions before everyone else? On this page it says:

LOTTERY DEADLINES

The HASS-D Selection System will be available from 9:00 a.m., May 1, 2006, through 5:00 p.m. on August 17, 2006.

So it's just members of the Class of '10 that have to sign up by now?

Yeah, the lottery for upperclassmen is still open.

I presume they want to make sure every freshman who wants a HASS-D gets one... they're not so concerned about the upperclassmen. :)

Ok, I emailed the office with my choices and a short explanation and they entered me into the lottery :)
