Hate the schooI I go to, but I cannot transfer to any schools I like. What next?

Hey guys.

I’m a sophomore currently and I hate the school I got to. I am miserable here. I don’t hate just the school. I hate the people here, the town, everything. I was in the process of looking at schools in California to attend (where I am originally from) but the ones I was looking at need 60 credits to transfer as a junior. I won’t have that many, although I’d be close, by the time I am a junior (due to a mistake in only taking 12 credits last semester) and now I feel as though I am stuck here.

Like I said, I hate it here. This is not what I expected college to be like. I just don’t know what I can do to make these next 4 years bearable…

I apologize for ranting, I know it is childish. College is so important to me and this was the one decision I didn’t want to regret making.

Can any of you guys give me advice? Insight? Steps to move forward?

Thanks so much!

Could you CLEP some credits and have the CA schoold accept them?

Thanks for replying! That’s what I was going to try to do, but even if that happens, I am not sure if all my courses will transfer over. Do California schools transfer any credits?

I know 2 kids went out of state then came back to California through the CC route. One ended up at UCLA and the other at SDSU.

That’s encouraging! How far behind would that put me? I’m already set to graduate in 5 years, which is longer than I originally planned. Would I have to do more?

BTW, thank you for replying. I didn’t get to say that in my original post!

It depends on your major. Some takes longer like engineering. Check out the UC transfer forum.
So if you enroll in CC the coming semester and finish the prereqs, you can transfer to any school either at UC or CSU.

When all else fails, the one thing you still have control over is your attitude. Of course there are some colleges that are tough to love. But you can still find ways to make the best of this. Sorry for the pep talk, but sometimes the life lesson is finding what does advantage you, right where you are.

Ok! Thanks! I’ll do that!

No need to apologize! Any advice is welcome. I am trying to think of ways I can at least enjoy the school a little but I can’t find any reason! The campus is pretty. That’s about it…

It’s hard to give you suggestions for what you can do to improve your experience (in the event that you can’t transfer schools or in the meantime while you’re waiting) without knowing a little bit about what you don’t like about your school and what you think would be improved by transferring to a school in California.

Is it your classes? Is it that you haven’t made any friends? Is it that you don’t like the campus? Is it that you don’t like the area that the campus is located in? What have you tried already to make your time there better?

There are lots of posts of students not liking college for one reason or another in this forum, and there are lots of suggestions for what to try to improve the experience. Also, depending on the reason you don’t like your school, transferring by itself might not actually solve any of those problems.

^What @baktrax said. You said that you hate everything about where you are - but do you really, or is this a case of “grass is greener” syndrome, where you really would just rather be somewhere else and thus you see everything where you are in a negative light?

join organizations. one might not be enough. i’m pretty sure you’ll meet several friends. i’m sure not all students from your school are horrid. share stories with them. in that 5 years, before graduation, i’m pretty sure that you’ll just laugh at what you posted in here because this ain’t a big problem at all. good luck mate.

Certainly look into all of the suggestions about how to transfer to CA but also try to make the best of it. Can you study abroad for a semester next year? Do an exchange program at a different university? Do something like Semester at Sea? Take an internship for a term? Something new to give you a change of scenery while still earning credits. Finish line would then be closer in sight.

I feel sad for you. Reading all your rants makes me feel like I want you to get out of there immediately. But I like @4Gulls suggestions “a change of scenery” maybe that’s what you need to get a better perspective of your college and the people around it you may need to see another place

I have a similar problem OP. Did you look at some of the private schools in CA? You don’t need 60 units to transfer to private schools.
