Wonderin how i would fare...Not really trying for Harvard...but Columbia would be great..even Stanford's awesome...or any IV league education..lemme no plz asap

I hope you burn for an eternity in that special section of Hell reserved for the people who start the same thread with the same post on the boards for every top 25 school.

I bet the folks at the UNC/CMU/et al boards had fun when you told them that you were "tryin' for an ivy league education".

the ivy league is only 8 schools. Perhaps you mean you are looking for an ivy league QUALITY education. Stanford, MIT, Duke, etc. aren't part of our league.

2nd if you're not actually strongly interested in a school, don't post your chances in that school's board. Theres a "what are my chances" board for general inquiries.

3rd: you'd have less competition coming from a country like namibia, but england (you're from england right?) will probably make your chances a bit tougher at any US school since it's pretty much america but a bit cooler with an awesome accent and theres probably a significant application base there. Just be thankful you're not in india.

For an american applicant you'd be in the running for acceptance as long as you had SOME significant ECs/CS. In the running I said, that's not the same as "likely to be accepted." The volume of college applications, especially to the top schools, makes the process somewhat of a crap shoot, even at schools with seeminly higher acceptance rates like cornell.

And while we're lax on capitalization and punctuation on these boards, we appreciate proper spelling. This is not just for the sake of us trying to help you, but also so you don't get roasted as perro alludes to in his last sentance.

I will try and say this as respectfully as possible: CC is a very nice and friendly place for the most part. It's only choppy and rude when posts like the one above are made. Don't feel shunned though. Just kick the bad habit and people will still be friendly to you and more than willing to help.

sorry i thought that IGCS stuff was british. well...wherever you go to school and live i think is where they consider you are from when it comes to international status. ethnicity is seperate. i'm under the impression india is super competitive when it comes to applying to colleges.

yes sparticus you are def right..india is very competitive and there are super brilliant ACADEMIC kids out there who score almost perfect scores in everything and their math is so great..well anyways

If you experience too much competition to get into a school of the calibur you are aiming for (which is quite possible considering your stats aren't absolutely PERFECT + you are an Indian international):

...consider applying to a less competitive US school, either something just below the super-top like Rochster, or a second tier school like Tulane (random, just an example) or something, knowing full well that you can work hard and get excellent grades for 1 or 2 years, and then apply as a transfer to the institution of your choice. With your SAT score and a 3.9 or 4.0 GPA in college you could write an essay about being under-challenged at your school or something and have a fair shot at transferring to the ivy quality school you seek.

no no lol im not relly experiencing much competition. i live in the middle east and go to an INTERNATIONAL school. i was just talking bout indian kids in general living in india. i mean i know the odds are against me getting into an ivy league or top ranked school but i would say the odds are against most ppl trying for such schools. my stats aren't perfect but im still going to give it a shot. im def going to give it a shot. no harm done in trying rite?

im def looking at other schools of course - safety and reachable ones.

Hopefully others will notice that something along the lines of this simple and more general format is much easier to read and evaluate, and just better, than long winded explanations, excuses, and anecdotes, etc. Here we go:

Objective:
---GPA: 3.34/4.00 UW from a very competitive public school (13% of 270 seniors going ivy)
---Courses: Very challenging, but less than most rigorous in earlier years. (not senior, 5 APs; heheh)
---Scores: 740/740; 770 IIC, 780 Writing, 650 Lit.; 4 AP US & World

Subjective:
---State Champ in Taekwondo; Instructor
---Many years baseball
---Many years trumpet & trombone
---In schools top jazz band from freshman year on; section leader
---Started Jazz Club->school small combo performance group
---Religious School through 10th grade
---Started Ski Club

Community Service
---Music Mentoring
---Summer Community Service/CS Education Program in Baltimore

Summers
---Job at beach
---Johns Hopkins CTY summer education (7th/8th grade SAT score based admissions...nationally well known program, and i'm not saying i'm some mensa genius or something, but everyone I know from there almost without exception is going to an ivy calibur school.)

wow those are relly good esp the ECs. i see you took many leadership and responsibility opportunites. ure SAT was only 1480 so shows that you can get in with a decent but not VERY high score, rite?

This probably is arrogant sounding, but I don't think i've ever heard a 1480 on the old SAT prefixed with an "only" or described merely as "decent" :), and while I feel your opinion of a good score may be skewed, you're right in that cornell's middle 50th is probably somewhere along the lines of (and this is general and rounding), 1300-1500 or possibly a few points lower. It was like 1280-1470 i think for c/o '08.

And yeah, I think my ECs were definitely a strength, and I also recognized the leadership roles, and did my best to present them (modestly of course) in my application.

Anectodal:
They say play up your strengths and ignore your weaknesses in an app. You obviously must consider your weaknesses, but try to focus on the positive in general.

no i def didnt mean it like that. dnt take it like it. its a great score. its just that im very confused right now as to what is a good score since ppl in this forum are getting 1550s consistently. anyways

No offense taken, and I can see how this forum skews the percieved averages. This forum is the "top 20%" type of applicant for the most part with a few average and below average students here and there.

I applied ED and I start in 20 days. But I love it without even being there. Not concerned about the winter either, I like snow. Is that the response you were looking for?

Oh yeah in stats I forgot to mention I was also a Legacy (father undergrad, but he didn't do anything special like sponsor a building)

Sparticus...you're stats look a lot like mine:) I won junior nationals a couple years ago for taekwondo and won us open once too, do you think the taekwondo helped a lot? I'm usually captain of the state team and teach classes a couple times a week. Are you planning on joining Cornell's taekwondo team...it's pretty good:)

I think TKD helped more than some other random non-recruited sport, because cornell has such a strong team (2nd to MIT this year in the northeast conference GRRR haha)

Props on your success. What's the competition like @ nationals? I mean rediculous, I assume, but to what extent. Because I want to try and compete on the national level in the next few years. London '12 baby! lol yea right, but we all can dream haha.

who are you, like, do you go to cornell or what? or in the Northeast TKD conference? but anyway thanks, I hope to enjoy cornell.
