Have a Great Time at Open House

Hi lilmom! I wish we would have met. I had CC on my nametag, but did not notice anyone else with it. 2Leashes and CalMom05 and I sat with some other nice parents.

I booked the Holiday Inn Express for Sunday night. I walked into the hotel and they showed me a room and the new lobby. It was very nice and so close to the campus. They also serve a full breakfast as part of the price. They didn’t know that move-in had been changed to a Monday, so they really appreciated me telling them. They agreed that booking early is a must! I am going to join the club they have there so I can earn points each time. They have a AAA discount. My room with 2 queen beds will be $139

Thanks for all the updates. We are up in Washington State and could not make it down for the Open House. We really appreciate the updates. I know my daughter will really benefit from the number of clubs and activities available at Cal Poly.

Did anyone attend the College of Agriculture / Animal Studies departmental program? If so, I would appreciate a review on the presentation.

I am in the Holiday Inn Rewards club too.

When I went to orientation at CU, I really hit it off with the man in charge of the Parent Foundation. I asked him if there was a way for kids to get to know each other before going off to Boulder in August. He told me about the send off parties. He sent me a list of kids in our area of San Diego with their contact info and I sent out invitations. He sent a bunch of CU stuff like stickers, key chains, the black and gold beads that kids wear to the football games, etc. I also make a point to talk to him at Parent Weekend and we email back and forth.

I had it around the pool and just had salads and pizza from Pat and Oscars. The parents came also, so I got to know them as well.

I don’t know if CP recruits (I don’t think so). But, when CU comes to San Diego for their big recruit in October, they typically have a luncheon for CU parents. I always go. I met a professor there 2 years ago that was extremely popular. His Anthropolgy classes are virtually impossible to get into. He told me to tell my son to email him that he met his mom in SD and he would let him in the class. Needless to say, S is now a double Anthropology/History major.

Thanks SdMom56! Do you know if the CP parent group does anything similar? Great job making connections easier for your son at CU. Sounds like he is doing well!

I think we will have the kids from my son’s highschool get together at some point this summer. He knows of at least 16 kids going to CP. They are not all close buddies, but it is nice to have a familiar face and some hometown connections. It would be a good way for parents to meet too. Maybe a potluck at a park or something. Thanks for the idea.

I think anything that you plan would be great. I will call after May 1 and ask the parent foundation when they think that they have a solid list of kids. I will report back to everyone.

I have an idea. Anyone that is going to move in day and spending the night before…book into the Holiday Inn Express. Then, we can all meet on Sunday night for a few minutes.

Works for us! My son’s roommate is also staying there. Do you want to post a new thread suggesting it? We could all go out to dinner even.

We’ve already got reservations at the Quality Inn Suites. I guess we could switch to the Holiday Innn Express or just stay at the Quality Inn Suites and meet up for dinner.

We loved open house as well, but I did not manage to find any other CCers. We were at the Embassy Suites. I think my son may go. Mariner, where are you in WA? We are in Seattle.

Hi ParentalUnit58. Yes we are in the Seattle area over in Redmond. I sent you a PM. Glad you had a good time.

Hi CalMom05. If you don’t want to switch, we could make dinner plans. It would be fun to have the kids hanging out at the hotel together though. The grown ups too of course. I went inside the hotel and they remodeled it very nicely. The Qualtiy Suites is really nice too though.

SDMom56, great idea. We’ll book the Holiday Inn Express, too!
BTW, momofmv, how did you and the others find each other at the parents’ social? There were so many people in the room!

So glad many of you had a good experience at Open House. Its success is largely due to the fact that it is planned and executed by the students of various clubs and organizations, who were in similar “college search” situations not too long ago. Encourage your future Poly kids to get involved when they arrive on campus!

Great advice 08alum! The kids were amazing and so excited about what they were doing. It is a great way to give back!

Yeah lilmom! I’m so glad you will book at the Holiday Inn Express too. I met CalMom05 at the famous gum alley on Thursday, so i knew what she looked like and then I had given my cell phone # to 2Leashes and she called me so we could meet. I did have CC on my name tag, but i really didn’t walk around too much. It was such a great program!
I hope you had a good time. We will meet at move-in day. I would book as soon as you can.

My daughter just sent in her acceptance for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (Dept. of C&RP). The warm reception she received on open house weekend made all the difference for her. She was accpeted at many other schools–including UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, Macalester, Lewis & Clark, Puget Sound, UofVermont, Occidental, Pitzer and others. BUT what made Cal Poly stand out was the open house and fun atmosphere. Everyone we met was inviting and made the school a special place to our daughter. We just submitted the housing application–Cerro Vista first, and the connections dorms as the second choices. This is our third child to head to college (the other two attended UofChicago and Lewis & Clark), so we’re familiar with the process–but we have to say, again, that Cal Poly is a perfect fit for #3. All the best to the rest of you and your kids who are electing to attend. We couldn’t be more pleased.

Congratulations to you and your daughter flydad! She had some great schools to choose from. My son loved Open House too and it confirmed his decision to go to Cal Poly rather than the other schools he was accepted to. He also chose Cerro first! Good luck to your daughter and I think she made a great choice!
