Open House

Who is going? ARe you staying there over night? Is it that important to go to Saturday? Or is friday good enough? Pretty sure all the hotels are booked, and I have a track meet that saturday and I really want to go to it. and does anyone know what we are ging to be doing there…just a more indepth tour aimed towards your major?

Lodging isn't provided for admitted students?

Not for Open House

Anyone here been to SLO open house? If yes, how was it and what did you do? Would it be worth the 3.5 hour drive from So. Cal?

Depends on if you want to see more of Poly. For some it might be the extra hype they need, others it could be boring. If your PARENTS need any extra push to let you go to Poly, then deff. go! Friday morning is spent working your way down through the welcoming speeches. All the way from the Univ. president to your personal school. You start as one big group and break on down, until you have only the people that have been accepted to your specific major. That is a great way to see who the competition is. Most of the clubs on campus have booths up with fun activities. Greeks have booths. Lots of food to buy, fund raisers for the clubs. Dorms are open, every building on campus is open. Every major has hands on displays and projects. Instructors are everywhere answering questions. Even the secret Aero Building, building 007, is open. Every other time you have to have a key card just to get in the front door! Many majors have special events just for accepted students and family. Robot competitions, Tractor Pulls, Rodeo. A very busy day if you want. Parking can be intense, so allow time. Went two years ago with my D. Will go again this year with my son. I feel it is a necessary part of starting "the Poly experience". The city of SLO puts on a show too. You can start with Thursday night market and go throughout the weekend! Try Woodstock's for pizza and Bally's for Ice Cream. Get your Poly sweatshirts etc. early, they sell out by Sun am! There is actually a campus store downtown if you want. Open House started as Poly Royal many years back. It was shut down for a few years because the Friday and Saturday night "after" parties got too wild. (burned some railroad tracks, lots of drunken people arrested in the streets) Much "quieter" event now. If you are looking for parties, try UCSB. They are all around SLO, but on the down low. Pretty stiff penalties for Poly students if arrested that weekend, at least so they were told last year, the focus is on how "wholesome and educationally unique" the school is. So yeah, if you are convinced of that already, and you have visited the campus already, and you just want to have a boring weekend at home - then don't go. But if you want to get Senioritis bigTime and get completely revved to go off to college, then this is your ticket. And our drive is five hours.

"...And our drive is five hours."

Hey, kirbysanmom, I was wondering what part of NoCal you're in and if 5 hours is your typical drive there. We've just been once for a tour and it took us around 6 hours! :( Also, did you consider UCSB when deciding on colleges? My son is down to these 2 and we're trying to figure out which is better for him.

I wish I could say he's going to open house, but my husband and I made plans for a weekend away before we got the notice about the dates :( Unfortunately, he doesn't know many people from his school going to CalPoly.

We are in Sonoma County, and honestly, the drives depends on what time you are driving through where... ( and if you have a tailwind :-) ) The 85 cut off of 280 helps alot if you are coming from the North Bay. My daughter takes that all the time. Commute traffic of course bogs you down, sometimes the difference of waiting a 1/2 hour to leave actually ends up saving an hour of frustrating commute traffic driving. You just gotta know your roads... And sports schedule... Don't go East Bay on A's game days, etc. Worst speed trap is around Soledad. They pull kids over regularly! Several friends have been pulled over there, Cal Poly AND UCSB students. We joke they just look for the window stickers! lol!

As for the weekend away... Go stay at Sycamore Springs open house weekend. It is a spa type atmosphere, hot tubs up a hillside under the stars, Avila Area. Awesome everything. During the day, go to Open House. You will never get a better view of the campus. Admitted Students Day, the majors strut their stuff. You meet other kids in your major. The following day, all the clubs strutt their stuff too. The whole campus is open doors. Tons of stuff do do for fun and education. Any and all questions are answered. You will be exhausted and on input information overload, but, you will never regret you changed your plans to attend!

Is Anyone going for all three days?..I'm only going for friday... Is that bad?

I'm going on friday and saturday. Haha I bought a Cal Poly Pomona sweatshirt when i went to CPP to take their mdpt (I seriously thought I was gonna go to that school). Anyway, I might just put duck take over the pomona part and where the sweatshirt or just wear it see what everyones reaction is hahaha.

Anyway, anyone taking CPSLO's MDPT? I got 600 on SATII Math IC, but 580 for Math IIC. I figure that exempts me right?

Anyone go today...I did..Nice to meet people in my major. Alot of people there. Professors seem great.

I led a tour for the bio department. The students and parents seemed really interested in our program. Fun stuff.

aka_llama - I had this same decision and I had my heart set on UCSB, but after visiting the POLY open house today, I'm definitely going to cal poly.

I'm worried that a majority of UCSB students are going to have the same mentality as the kids at my high school (very close to UCSB). Santa Barbara kids have way too much money and are generally very uppity. When i went to the campus i didnt get htat opinion, but Isla Vista is DEFNITELY full of kids like that and I didn't want ot be part of that. I also feel that POLY students tend to work a little more for what they earn, and the hands on approach allows them to perform better in industry htan the theory-based educated UC students

I couldn't go becuase i had a trackmeet today and math finals tomorrow.

but hey i got 1st place 110 meter hurdles.

I ran 2:01 in the 800 today.... w00t Definately worth missing open house today...(i think) What went on today?

Alot went on today.
