Open House weekend

Who is going and where are you staying?

My son and I are going Thursday evening and we are staying at the Travelodge (cheap place because we won’t be there too much!)

momofmv, S and I may be staying overnight afterall. I thought we would stay at my friends’ in Pismo Beach but S wants to be closer. So, I may look into Travelodge since my first picks are sold out or require 2 night min.

Great! keep me posted. We have stayed in the Quality Suites and Embassy Suites, but they are too pricey since we will not be in the hotel much. The schedule for Open House is so busy. I think you are smart to stay the night because of the traffic. I am hoping there is a shuttle to the campus. If not we can walk. I know it isn’t that far.
It would be fun to meet!

I am going with my son, and staying at Embassy Suites (membership in the chain’s “rewards” program). We are coming from out of state and arriving early, since my son has never seen the area. I lived in the Bay Area for a while years ago so have visited.

parentalunit58, how are you getting to the campus? I was looking into the Embassy Suites but I heard parking is a problem at the school and that hotel is farther away.

Apple Farm Inn is really nice. I just went down to visit a few days ago because I will be unable to attend the open house and was really impressed with the quality of apple farm inn. each room is uniquely decorated and some have fireplaces in the rooms.

ParentalUnit58 The Embassy Suites is a very nice place. My husband and I stayed there. It is a little farther away, so a car is helpful. You must be renting a car if you are flying in or you will have one if you are driving. Parking is a problem, so check and see if there is a shuttle. I hope your son loves Cal Poly! What day are you getting there?

Magias^ my sister-in-law just mentioned how good the food is at the Apple Farm Inn. Especially the bakery! I think my husband and I will try out all of the hotels at some point during the 4-5 years my son is at CP. This time we are going for a cheaper motel for Open House just to have a place to stay. We want to be in the middle of things and don’t plan on being in the room much!

Everyone have fun at Open House! Please report back how it goes. I only live 2 hours away from Poly in Bakersfield but wont be able to make open house due to a race I’m in. I’ve been many times however. If you do try parking on campus I suggest trying the parking lot near the AG section of the school, its very large. It is located near the rear entrance to the school.

" If you do try parking on campus I suggest trying the parking lot near the AG section of the school, its very large. It is located near the rear entrance to the school. "

Both times I attended Open House, this is where all the cars were directed to park. Parking was organized and relatively easy from my experience. There were shuttles from this side of the campus or it is about a 10 minute walk.

Thanks guys! That is good to know. My friend who brought his son last year said the traffic was bad getting to the campus. That’s where they saw all of the drunken girls asking them to leave their son with them! They even offered my friend a beer! Great Cal Poly welocome! They tought it was funny. No harm!

the walk is not bad either…and it’s easier.

Hi nutellaella! That is what I think we will do. When are you heading down? Are you taking the bus or train like we talked about before?

momo - I believe that your friend was referring to drop-off day right before WOW week. Yes, traffic into campus was a mess and there was a huge keg party with those signs in between 101 and the campus. Last year, traffic and parking for the Open House weekend really wasn’t that bad. We stayed on Monterey and everyone was directed to park in the ‘Ag’ area. They seemed very prepared and it didn’t seem to be a problem. Enjoy the weekend - we had a great time last year. (my son is 1st year MatE major and loves it).

Thanks for the info on Embassy Suites. Yes, I am renting a car. My travel agent proposed that we fly into SLO on the way there but fly out of SFO on the way out. For some odd reason, this apparently saves money overall between the car rental and the flights. We are thinking of getting there on Wednesday. That week is my son’s spring break and I will take a few days off work. Given the distance of this hotel, I certainly will look for a shuttle or possibly a public transportation option. I have an older child at college on the East Coast, and the parking is horrific every time there is an event for parents, or when the kids move in. I am expecting it to be a challenge.

What is this keg event? Does not sound like something that would appeal to my son!

Yes, SLO-Pop you are right . That was WOW week that he was talking about. Sorry for the confusion. It sounds like Open House won’t be nearly as busy and wild. I am sure they do a good job with directing traffic. Thanks for mentioning that your son loves Materials. That makes my son and my family feel excited about his choice.

ParentalUnit58^ Glad you will have a car. It sounds like the parking will be fine for Open House. You will have a great trip! I can’t imagine having two kids in college on opposite ends of the country! I don’t think Cal Poly will be nearly as difficult for parking or anything else. It is a beautiful community and they really have things well organized from what I have seen when we have visited and from what experienced parents have said on this site. I hope Your son and your family love Cal Poly!
No worries about the keg event. That is during WOW week and if your son is not into that type of thing, he can avoid it. My son will be doing the same!

I just looked on the Open House page and there are housing tours from 10:00-4:00 during Open House. They meet infront of the 108 building Sequoia Hall

What entrance would that be, ralph4? Somewhere other than Grand Ave.? Also, is there a $5.00 parking fee for the day/night? Is there usually parking available if someone doesn’t arrive until 9:30-10:00ish am on Friday?

SLO_Pop, did you drive up Grand Ave. and *then *did they direct you? Or did you have to find another entrance to get to the Ag area? Thanks!

momofmv~ Are you going to walk down back town after the Parents Coffeehouse at 10 PM? I wonder how far it is on foot. We’ve walked back to our hotel from the Farmer’s Market the two times we went. But, it seems closer than Cal Poly.

2Leashes - the info provided last year said to enter on Highland Drive, not Grand Ave. They had a lot of people directing you to the parking area and it all went very smooth. I was just on campus last week - took a bunch of stuff to my son and also hit Firestone’s. It’s nice to see the progress made on the construction around UU. Looks very nice! I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
