Have any African Americans on here been rejected from UChicago?

Have any African Americans on here been rejected from Uchicago or/ Columbia ED? I'm applying there next year, and many people on here think that if you are a URM you will automatically get in to practically anywhere you apply.

Not so much outright rejected, but I know African-Americans that were deferred from Columbia. So it is possible.

And I can’t say for sure, but some say ED isn’t a big boost, some say it is. Nonetheless, they wouldn’t accept you if you have really bad grades and nothing to offer, even if you are black.

I don’t have stats for Chicago, but Columbia and all ivies reject about 75% of AA applicants. There’s definitely a boost, AA’s are accepted at twice the rate of the none hooked, but it’s far from a sure thing.

[The State of Black Student Freshman Enrollments at the Nation’s Highest-Ranked Colleges and Universities](The State of Black Student Freshman Enrollments at the Nation’s Highest-Ranked Colleges and Universities)

The Black acceptance rate for UChicago was 48.7 percent for the Class of 2012.

Going by hmom5’s post, AA applicants have a 25% acceptance rate at an ivy, compared to an unhooked, which is about 12%. Just generally speaking, of course! It’s “far from a sure thing” because 25% is still low.

Another way to see any pattern is to look through the threads that list acceptances/rejections at each school following ED decisions. These lists are not the complete list but it gives a “sense”.

Some schools have “appeared” to accept many more blacks / URM this year than in years past. Brown, for instance, accepted a much higher proportion of blacks and Hispanics than previous years, but percentages are misleading because numbers are still small. There’s a thread on that, and an article as well.

@kwu do you think that the number of AA acceptances for Uchicago are doubled for EA? I’ll be most likely applying EA
