I’m going to college starting this fall, first CC then University. Is a social work degree a good choice? Is the need going up or down for social workers? And I have thought about my career choice, and yes this is what I want to do, and I’m willing to work hard for it.
According to the [Bureau of Labor Statistics](http://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/social-workers.htm) the job has a faster than average growth. However, median salaries in 2012 were $44K per year. Depending on the cost of living of where you find a job this might be average or even slightly below average. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I’d just suggest against going too far into student loan debt to obtain such a degree.
If you are a “people person,” and if obtaining a knowledge of some government regulations isn’t intimidating to you, it may be a great choice.
Yeah, it’s also a relatively thankless job with a lot stress of the parents/families you are working with. That being said, if you like counseling and helping people, than a good choice.
Just starting school? I’ll bet big money you’ll change your major at least once!
The pay is very low… Unless you’ve got money you should probably study something else, preferably something with private sector demand.
Social work is basically the worst degree ever. I’ve never known anyone who was actually a social worker but I’ve had several teachers who used to be and they all have nothing but sad and depressing stories about how sad and depressing it was. Also poverty; horrible, horrible poverty. You will be so poor forever.
I’m getting married, so it’s not just my income. To be honest, I’m not in it for the money. I want to do everything in my power to help someone.
“Social work is basically the worst degree ever. I’ve never known anyone who was actually a social worker . . .” EntranceExam should retake the test.
I have a family member who has been a social worker for 20 years. He is reasonably paid (in a nonprofit) and has found the career to be very rewarding.
Thank you MidwestDad3! I was looking for firsthand (or close to) experiences!
