I have a fun research project. Type the name of a college into facebook with a surname.

Type a name of a college and a surname to see what college graduates are doing with their life. This way you can see if they got a good job or a job related to their degree. I checked on one of my old room mates who majored in Chicano Studies and it turns out he is now a massage therapist. He told me in 2005 he was hoping to become a school councilor. I guess things didn’t work out. Do you think his degree helped him live a better life? I’m currently looking at others on facebook and it’s very interesting to see how things turned out.

What’s wrong with being a massage therapist? It’s a wonderful career, helping people feel better.

It’s school “counselor,” by the way.

Nothing, he just ended up needing a certificate to get a job instead of a $30,000 BA.

That could be more a personal choice for other reasons than because he couldn’t get work with his degree. People change their minds.

How you define “good” may not be the way they define it. Why is this important to you? There are far better ways to spend your time.

@austinmshauri You don’t need to waste your time telling me how to spend my time. I enjoy doing research on mundane things.

I think it wasn’t a forced choice. Also i think that yes, college degree has helped him in a way. You see there, college is able to teach you not only about your majors and minors but also about life, society, behavior, etc. The more communications you have during college - the better person you become in most cases.

Many people stray from their career choice / major in college. It’s called life. I was supposed to be a sportscaster or news anchor back in the day when local stations mattered (pre-cable). For the past 28 yrs I’ve owned and operated my own insurance and investment brokerage firm (recently have been a guest on a financial radio show so I guess the degree finally kicked in :)]) .

My husband studied education for almost four years before he decided that teaching wasn’t the career for him. He eventually went back and got his engineering degree. But we’ve realized that client education is a big part of being a structural engineer, so his first go-round in college still helped him. He teaches people almost every day!

@MaineLonghorn I don’t think most people even know how to apply education to improve their lives. I knew a security guard with a B.A. in Anthropology who said he felt his education was useless. In my opinion a person should apply arts and sciences to improve every facet of their life.
