Have questions? Ask an Andover Freshmen!!

hey do the administrators look at your ssat number score or the overall percentage? bc the first time i took it, i got 89% and then i got a 93%. however the number score differs slightly. do you think i should send the 2nd score in? or would that lower my chances since i didnt improve all that much?

Basically, the ssat is to judge whether you can take a test decently well. As long as you get an overall of about 85% (which you did) or above, you should be fine. I had an overall 90% with a very low 60% in verbal, so don’t worry too much. And YES send in the second score. They like to see that you are being proactive in your improvement :D

helloel: Tryouts happen the day after classes start. If you are a recruit, then the coach will probably contact you to come to preseason. This is for the fall term. Winter and spring term have regular tryouts for varsity and jv teams. Most of this is explained in emails and such.

What types of questions are asked at interviews? I am going to schedule an off campus interview and have never been to interview before!

@ swimdude006 can I pm you a couple of personal questions please?

When is the application deadline?

@ pickaboo:
I know what you mean.
First, use this website:
[The Boarding School Advantage - The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS)](http://boardingschools.com/for-parents/the-advantages.aspx)

then,
http://boardingschools.com/media/6649/truth.swf

Simply, discuss and try to get a 360 perspective. Literally, debate it out, see what each one needs and wants and try to find solutions and inquire!

Best of Luck!!! :)

what SSAT scores did you get (and what percentile)?

and also, how many room mates do you have? I heard about “clusters” but the whole thing just confused me

Do you feel that the huge size of Andover gives a lot of stress and competition?

Maybe I can answer this question somewhat. Well my interviewer described it as this:

Andover strives to admit students with unique interests and talents. All Andover students have a very specific passion. This relieves some competition, because very diverse people aren’t competing in the same way. And sometimes they aren’t even competing for the same things.

But I guess this wouldn’t be completely true for college admissions, because colleges want to admit diverse students as well. But he didn’t say anything about size, so I don’t know.

Also, does anyone know if I can use the common Gateway to prep schools personal rec instead of Andover’s sealed one if I’m applying to Andover?

It is the quality of the competition, not the number of people competing, which matters.

That is why all top prep schools are stressful, whether they are relatively larger like Andover Exeter, Choate, and Lawrenceville or relatively smaller like SPS, Milton, Deerfield, and Hotchkiss.

If it were otherwise, a large and academically undemanding public school with 4,100 students would be more academically stressful than a smaller and highly rigorous prep school with 1,100 or 600 students.

In any event, Andover does not feel “huge.” The classes are small. The students are friendly, not cut-throat. And the cluster system divides the school into five small residential communities comprised of only 225 students each.

If anything, the cluster system allows Andover to combine the extensive opportunities of a larger prep school with the intimacy of a smaller prep school. For many people, that’s an unbeatable combination.

Whoa! sorry guys. I’ve been on a training trip in florida for the past week so couldn’t get around to the computer!

Pickaboo: Tell him that you want to be exposed to a new learning environment, it is one of the best secondary school educations in the country, and that it doesn’t hurt to apply (you don’t HAVE to say “yes”)! And I actually do agree with your father for the freedom issue. I’ve realized that at PA, you have to make your own descisions and so far, those descisions haven’t been the best for me, which is why i’m adjusting for the winter term. He does have his points, just put better ones out there!

helloel: interview is just to get to know you. Some questions are like “what’s your favorite subject? how’s your family situation? how are your friends? what are your ECs? why did you want to apply to X school? what other schools did you apply to? etc.” Just be yoruself and you’ll be fine!

simsim97: no need for permission, just ask away!

Classof2015hs: that can be found on the application/webseite [Phillips Academy - An Independent Boarding High School](http://www.andover.edu)

ARoseAmongWeeds: Verbal: 69% Math:98% Reading Comp.:95% overall: 93%
And I don’t have a room mate. Most have just one other room mate, but sometimes, kids can get 3 room tripples (3 rooms, 3 people), or 2 room tripples (2 rooms, 2 people). On a rare occasion, people get 3 room doubles!

hope this helps!

Well, I have two questions. Thanks in advance!

Do you share a bathroom with other students? If so, how many?

What aspect of day-to-day living at boarding school would you say causes you the most inconvenience each day (it takes a long time to do laundry, etc.)?

@CherryRose:

 1. I share one with three other students. I’m pretty sure it varies depending on the dorm.
 2. Finding time to do everything. Also, changing sheets. Laundry isn’t that big a big deal for me.

Wait, swimdude006…
Sorry, might be a stupid question, but…
For the part you were saying about interviews… and then you gave sample questions… “What is your family situation?”
I don’t really get the meaning of the question. D:

Thanks :)

Myshakaful: meaning how well do you get along with your family, how many siblings, if any, do you have, home issues, etc. Interviews are just to get to know the applicant. Remember that AOs will only accept kids they think will be successful in their school environment so don’t sugar-coat any of your stats!

^in my andover interview, they also asked about my parents - whether they were supportive of this, and whose decision/idea it was to apply :)

OHHHHH. Okay, thanks for the clarification, swimdude006
Haha, sorry, didn’t know what you meant by ‘family situation’ but it all makes sense now. Thanks!

And also, thanks blehjoints! :D
