Have questions? Ask an Andover Freshmen!!

CollegeCookie: being nationally ranked in girl’s chess and state ranked in math is definitely a great thing to have! and don’t worry, there is PLENTY of room for common people here at Andover. Andover hosts a wide variety of kids, and there are always people in the middle! And don’t consider yourself less than average, coming from being “nationally ranked” in chess and math, you seem like a great candidate

My interview with PA is soon (on-campus). I have a strong interest in drawing, and I have a couple drawings that I’m pretty proud of. Should I bring some there to show my interviewer or does it really not make a difference at all?

Myshkaful: I wouldn’t really suggest it. Just mention that you have a passion for drawing and I think you will be fine. Bring the drawings and ask if you could put them in the mailbox of the art department chair. THen they might write a rec for you :D

Best of Luck!

@Myshkaful: Last year, I was able to meet teachers in subjects of my interest at Exeter and Deerfield. When I tried to make appointments with teachers at Andover, they acted busy and elite and refused to meet with me. Ideally, you should be able to make appointments to meet with the Art department head or a teacher on the day of your interview and show them your art work. I’m sure it is possible at Exeter and Deerfield.

Thanks Myshkaful! I tried to do my best on the rest of my app. :)

@Jolley – Ahh, if only I had known that before my interviews with PEA or Deerfield…
Thank you for the advice though. Do you think I should meet with the people at PA, or do you think I can just meet with the people of the Art Department?

Since you are passionate about Art, you should meet with whoever is available. Based on my experience, I doubt you’ll be able to do that at PA. I was able to do it at all schools except PA. Needless to say it dropped of my priority list really fast.

Im in the 80th percentile for my SSAT, can I still be accepted at Andover?!?

naturallyme: Yes, it is still possible! don’t lose hope. I know TONS of kids who had below the 80th percentile on the ssat so don’t worry. Just do your best in the other parts of your aps and you should be fine!

Hi! I have my interview & tour on Wednesday. Maybe I will see you! Is there anything that I should expect or prepare for the tour?
Can you give me some tips to prepare for the interview?
Thanks.

I think I tend to talk too much by fully answering a question, but then not knowing when to stop and eventually becoming off-topic.
Also, would you suggest that I bring a notebook as a visual aid so I counter ^ and to note what the interviewer says?

SORRY bklai8!! I haven’t had time to get on my computer lately :(. Hopefully you can still read this. For the interview, just be yourself and try to keep every question pretty concise. You don’t want to rant on about a topic for the sake of putting in parts of your app. into the conversation. And don’t bring in a notebook, the conversation should be pretty casual (they gave me a muffin and water and I was sitting on a couch at mine). Hope this helps!

Thanks for replying! I figured out that I should only bring my notes to ask questions at the end, just in case I forget any. And I’ll ask the interviewer whether he is looking for, details or a quick summary and I’ll also warn him that I tend to talk a lot when I am excited, so if he or she wants to stop me; she should.

Hi everyone! I was just wondering, do you think that it would be ok for me to contact the teachers at the schools about my subjects of interest? Or is it too late now? And also, what should I say when/if I contact them?

Thank you so much!<3

Hi so I just got an email from Andover saying that they haven’t gotten my SSAT results or my math recommendations, but I know both were sent a long time ago?!! I am faxing them again this weekend but it’s well past the due date, what does this mean?! Am I at a disadvantage since I’m sending them in late?! Will they accept them by fax?! Has this happened to anyone else?!

@naturallyme: i’m pretty sure that you won’t get penalized for sending them late b/c 1. you already sent them; it’s just that they haven’t received it. 2. both of those are sent by others and not by you. so technically, you can’t “control” it.

@liveformusic: what do you mean contact them about your subjects of interest? like what you are interested in and what activities you would like to participate in the future? i would personally just include that on my resume instead of calling them.

Yeah I’m having the same problem with my school report, my counselor sent it but they didn’t get it so my mom is going to take it to the post office to make sure the right amount of postage is paid because that could be a reason it didn’t get to them. Will this put me at a disadvantage if they will just be getting my school report in a couple days? Also, I didn’t know you could fax it? Would that be better?

don’t worry about late postage. Admissions really doesn’t care about the date if it’s a week or two late. They know that things might go wrong with postage so you all should be fine :)

I think my interview went strangely… from the perspective of my parents and me. For me, the instructor interviewed me with the content of formal conversation, but he seemed very uninterested in me and unenthusiastic. He was looking at his fingernails half the time even while he asked me questions and even while I made him burst out laughing. My parents told me that he said I did a good job and he was very cheerful to them. So I am confused about how I did, but it feels like I did poorly. I’m soooo confused haha.

Well it depends if he burst out laughing because you’re funny or because you did something embarrassing haha.
