I have a quick question: I am in the process of filling out my graduate applications and I am trying to figure out if I have to report my community college units and grades. I attended a UC (University of California) straight out of high school and I took community college classes to graduate faster.

Do I have to report community college units on my grad school applications?

Yes, you need to send transcripts for any college classes you took, no matter where/when. I sent out transcripts from 7 schools – a lot of fun coordinating that. I even had to send some twice to one program that filed some under my maiden name.

Kinda bugs me when schools want 2x copies of transcripts, I had a few like that. They’re to the same address too. Maybe the Xerox machine is down…

Would be even worse with seven schools, though! I had three. And with the maiden name complication eg1 mentions, that would be 28 transcripts to a single program! I know you didn’t mention having to send two transcripts, just sharing a worst-case scenario that just popped into my head. :)

You can always contact the school and ask them if the information is reported on your most recent transcript if that is fine. For example, at the beginning of my transcripts it lists all transfer credit received, and GPA calculation. If you have courses relevant to your major at these other schools you may be out of luck, however if you just took courses to met GE requirements you can possibly save some money.

I asked one school what was up with the double transcript thing, they said they have one approval process for the graduate school as a whole, and another process for the specific program.

If you don’t mind me asking, how did it work out for you, having so many transcripts? I will have to send 4 when I fill out my grad school apps and I am a little nervous about how that may look…

It worked out fine for me. I went to one college when still in high school. Then I went to my main college for 4 years. Then I did some grad classes that my employer paid for. Then I went to another school for some pre-reqs before applying to a graduate program. Went to said graduate program. Took personal enrichment classes at two community colleges. Applied to PhD programs. So this was spread out over 20+ years. Spreadsheets are great to keep track of lots of records!

The last time I had to get copies of my transcripts (also seven different institutions by the way!) I ordered extra sealed official copies and stashed them in my filing cabinet. When I need them again (in life you always find you need one more set of these things), I can just pull them out of the drawer and bundle them together myself.
