Just wondering what people thought of the password changes coming for Netflix. I have one college student left (and pay for four screens) but from what I have read she may be able to log in from a device versus a tv. And even then could probably cast to the TV.
It’s “only eight dollars” but it’s the principle for me. That being said, I will probably do it for my college kid. Sigh.
I need to get up to snuff on this. I usually share my account with my daughter but she had trouble logging in last week. We got her in but I haven’t checked my account yet to see if I’m bumped out now!
I don’t mind paying a little extra for extra screens/devices but I’m wondering if it even makes sense to have more than one person on an account.
I upgraded to the premium/$19.99/4 user plan during the pandemic. At the time I had no other streaming services. But then I added Apple TV w/some deal I got thru buying a new cell phone or something. If Netflix won’t allow my non household family members use my account then I will drop down to a Basic plan.
I’m still trying to understand the implications for us. My daughter has the primary account, DH and I, and my sister in another state, are family members.
My daughter thinks she can come over periodically and log in to our internet. That may or may not cost the extra 7.99. For my sister, it would be best for her to get the 7.99 deal just for her to watch occasionally. We can afford a subscription better than she can, but I would prob seriously think about swapping Netflix for another service for a while if it came to that.
DD hasn’t yet received an official notice from Netflix, but I expect that, anytime soon when I go to Netflix, I’ll get the invite to get my own subscription.
I’m really irritated by this and have already dumped Netflix because of the policy. Ok, you want my grown children to have their own account? Lame, but okay, whatever.
BUT. Hey Netflix. Are you saying that I can’t watch Netflix on my tv at my beach house without an extra charge? Pfft. NOT OKAY.
Buh-bye. You’re not as relevant as you think you are.
(And, if I’m mistaken and just misunderstanding this, anyone is free to correct me!)
We have Netflix Basic free with our T Mobile account, which we share with S. However, you need to have Standard in order to add new users. We can upgrade to Standard for $6.50 and add S for $7.99, so in our case, it would be cheaper for him to get his own account ($6.99 w/ads or $9.99 w/o). Not sure if he’s tried to use it recently, so we’ll have to discuss his options.
This is a direct quote from the recent email from Netflix
But I can’t find anything on the FAQ’s that confirms this, or says how to do it. Maybe it’s totally possible, but I’m just so irritated by it that I’m not going to spend any more time investigating…
The fact that Netflix is squeezing subscribers for every penny, while simultaneously starving their writers of compensation and positioning themselves as a leading villain of the WGA strike, is not warming my cockles at all. I barely watch Netflix anymore, and have been keeping it only because my kids (who no longer live at home) watch it, and because my T-Mobile plan subsidizes it. I’d rather do without than give them more money.
I am the only one who uses my Netflix account so haven’t paid much attention, but just did some research.
This article seems to suggest that you need to “trigger” Netflix on a device every month from your primary location to be able to access on that device from anywhere.
And this article talks about needing to get a verification code when signing into your primary account from elsewhere:
Been texting about this with my three kids who are all using our account from elsewhere, as well as some of their girlfriends and friends, I think. My understanding is that once you set a home base device, which is a tv I think - when we’ve opened it on two different tvs recently it’s asked us if we want to set that as our home tv, but so far we’ve just continued past without doing it. Any devices connected to the same internet as that tv can use the account.
I read something about Netflix actually wanting to push people to their less expensive ad supported version because they make $ from the ads as well as the subscriptions. Also read about people doing a month only and then just catching up on Netflix shows during that month, but wondering whether the ability to do a month and then cancel will be continued.
We’ve had Netflix for a long time but honestly I seem to watch the other streaming service we have - Max free with our ATT account, special offer $2.99/mo Hulu with ads, Prime because I shop a good bit through Amazon anyway, and Apple+, more than Netflix these days. I also just noticed it’s gone up to $19.99. So we may be done with Netflix. And I’m guessing my kids won’t get their own account once they can’t use ours.
Just realized I don’t need Standard and changed to Basic. I watch on a computer monitor so don’t need the higher resolution, and have never downloaded. If I did, it would be on one device. So will start saving over $6 a month, for what that’s worth.
This is what I thought - just subscribe for a month or two and then cancel once I’ve got a series or two out of the way. This is terrible business though all around.
My daughter was motivated yesterday to figure this out because we are going to be visiting extended family at their vacation home this summer for more than 30 days. But some members of our household will still be home using Netflix there.
When she called Netflix support, she was told that
when we first login at the vacation home, we will have 30 days without a problem
(That still doesn’t exactly work for us since husband will still be home and not want us to change the home base, but the extended family members also have a Netflix account and they will be with us at their vacation home, so my D is intending to have them change their home base using the instructions above and then if she wants to watch Netflix on her phone she might need to log into their account instead because her phone will be on the same wifi network as their tv). Hassle but she thinks it will work.
Netflix told her that you can switch your home base back again to the original home easily through the same process.
This is all really too difficult. They are totally going to lose subscribers. Some people are lucky enough to even figure out how to use a streaming service!
Yea, I think they will loose subscribers. One reason we don’t dump Netflix (temporarily) while we cycle through our subscriptions is that we see occasionally one of our kids log in.
