yes, i know, for MOST people, all-nighters and sleep deprivation hurt performance. but there are always outliers, and there has been no scenario where i have not been an outlier

i've noticed that when i'm sleep deprived, my variance in alertness increases. i'm sometimes super-alert and out of the brain fog that I'm usually in. i'm also more prone to napping, but the naps are revitalizing and then I wake up from them in a super-alert state (rather than in the state of brain fog that I'm always in whenever I get what people consider to be "adequate sleep"). 8 hours of sleep per day has always been a recipe for brain fog for me.

not only that, but i'm actually MORE tired when I get more sleep. i know it's maybe the stress hormones keeping me up, but man, stress hormones are awesome.

Adrenaline plus the fumes of whatever stimulant you partook in keeps you buzzing until you slam into the wall and go down in flames…must sleep…zzzzz

^ I don’t pull all nighters to study but I do pull all-nighters for travel (I can’t sleep in a car, on and airplane etc.) you don’t feel tired for a while but you have a dry mouth. Then at about 2PM you hit the wall and can’t think of anything but sleeping…

You know, it’s funny you say that today. I’m the same way. I was up until 3:30 last night and got about three hours of sleep. I was wide awake today. I aced a test I didn’t study for (didn’t know we had it…long story). Usually, I have to fight to keep my eyes open but days like today where I had little to no sleep I’m always feeling fine.

I don’t imagine that getting three hours of sleep a night is a very good way to be more alert though.

lol, i remember last year I had an AP World essay to do, and I had no choice but to pull an all-nighter. The next day in school, I was fully alert until about 1 pm [math]. We were doing something with a graphing calculator so I had it on my lap and was looking down at it. After about a couple of minutes, I just dozed off. Next thing I know, the bell rings and I literally jump a foot or two. Luckily no one really noticed since I was in the back of the room.

This year the latest I have stayed up is like 4.

More alert than having stayed up until 3am and slept 4 hours? Definitely… I regularly get high on sleep deprivation. I usually crash at around 2/3 pm too, though.

More alert than having slept a full 7/8 hours (i say full because this is the most i ever sleep on a school day)? No way.

I think you usually feel the effects on an all-nighter the second day after because of the adrenaline + whatever other else is exciting you after an all-nighter.

I stayed up for 2 nights in a row last week, which I normally can’t do. I was very alert until around 1:00 the second day when I fell asleep in the middle of a math contest.

In general, I stay alert until around 5:00 in the new day.
