A friend and I have been debating about the national recognition of a certain university that is located near us. In order to settle this, could anyone please tell me if they are at all famaliar with this school, and if they are, what are your general impressions of it. Also, if you don't feel like writing much, a simple yes/no would be much appreciated.

The school is Saint Louis University (SLU).

Same as above. No one in Georgia, where I live, would likely be aware of it unless they remember SLU making the NCAA basketball tournament a while back.

SLU is a Catholic private university that is decently thought of. They have a good pre-med program. If you are debating recognition, could one of you be thinking of Washington Univ. in St.Louis? That is is high ranking private university that is rather difficult to get in to. Falls in right behind the Ivys and top,top universities.

Having lived in St. Louis, I would have to say that its awareness is limited to the St. Louis area and potentially Illinois (as they advertise in Chicago and may advertise in other midwestern cities). A decent school though.

Yes, I do live in St Louis. As Pizzagirl pointed out, it is nearly impossible for a resident of STL to mix up WashU and SLU. However, that isn’t to say that SLU is a bad school; it’s well-known and respected throughout the area. The reason for my post was to get insight from people living outside of the Midwest. Most academics will have heard of WashU, but maybe not SLU - particularly in coastal areas.

I appreciate the replies people, keep 'em coming!

S1 considered it because we understood it’s AE program to be well-respected and because SLU is one of few universities to have a flight line. We have also heard from others in CT that its PA program is nationally known. My belief is that Jesuit universities appeal to a select demographic and that SLU is well-considered within that framework. I loved the school when we visited, but S2 choose another. Plenty of acquaintances were aware of SLU when S1 applied almost three years ago.

Its a GREAT school. Rev. Biondi, S.J. has raised a bunch of money and built all sorts of new buildings and dorms. It has a respected law school and medical school. Its in the heart of mid-town St. Louis on a gorgeous campus with a brand new basketball arena. Its on the other end of Forest Park from WashU-St. Louis and you can cross matriculate in many classes.

It has an amazing gothic cathedral on campus. In terms of the Jesuit colleges it is trying very hard to reach into the top tier, but is pretty much on par with the mid-tier schools like Loyola Chicago, Marquette, Creighton etc.

They give wonderful scholarships to deserving students. A strong faculty with some deep programs. And a unique program in Aviation Science right on campus.

Its Health Sciences program is rated number 1.

endlessrecession’s post is on target. Re: the new basketball arena, a bit of interesting trivia. It is a gift of an alum who tried to withdraw from SLU (some years ago) because his family hit hard times and they could not afford the tuition. The administration refused to allow him to quit, and he graduated with the promise that some day he would pay them back. It took a few decades, but he paid them back with a new arena.

The campus is adding dorms as they become less and less of a commuter college and draw students from outside the immediate region. The PA program is indeed very highly respected, and the university is in the process of adding some new programs. I think their future is very bright.

As for the OPs initial question: I have heard of SLU, but I probably don’t count because I grew up in St. Louis.

Jesuit school in Missouri. Teams names are the Billikens. Good reputation. Have had good basketball teams. Had a prominent philosophy professor at U of Toronto who went there as an undergrad.

SLU is in the A10 with my school. They always have the whitest team in the A10 and up there in the NCAA. They play in the brand new Chaifetz Arena which is absolutely fantastic. Only encountered a few SLU fans at the A10 tourney, but they were all very friendly.

Of all the schools my son considered, visited and applied to, Saint Louis University had the friendliest and most helpful admissions office. They were in constant contact, invited him to apply for scholarships, and put him in touch with students in his major to answer all his questions. He befriended many current students during visits as well as other prospective classmates. It is a beautiful, friendly and welcoming campus, he felt at home almost immediately. After our first visit, my reaction was the feeling that I could drop my son off for school in the fall and feel very comfortable doing so. I have never
completely had that sentiment before with any other school.

If you haven’t heard of SLU (ranked #80 in USNWR for Universities), you should get to know more about it because it is an amazing school. The Jesuit ideal is to train students to be “a man or woman for others”.

No surprise here, Son will be in the Class of 2013.

It has a good reputation at my school, especially their physical therapy program, although I live in Chicago, so this is probably just a regional reputation.

I have heard of it a bit. I thought it was not particularly selective but pleasant, a safety/match for smart Catholic students from that general part of the country. I know a fair number of college age students and I don’t know anyone from NE Ohio who goes there or has applied there, so my sense is that it is mostly a regional school.

I have heard of SLU! but I’m also from the Chicago area so that probably why. I attended an info session in Oak Brook in the fall and there was a lot of kids. As a junior, I’ve looked into SLU but the overall reputation and academics are probably my biggest concern and I think it would be hard to pass up U of I’s business school for SLU.
