Is anyone else frustrated that many people haven't heard of Vassar? I am considering attending Vassar, and whenever I mention the college in passing to people outside of school, most people have not heard of it. I personally think name recognition is overrated and not too important in choosing a college, but does this bother anyone else?

My dad is a Vassar grad and claims that it is the third most famous school in the world behind Harvard and Yale. As much as I try and reason with him that maybe Princeton, Oxford, or Stanford might be a little more well known than Vassar, he refuses to believe so.

I agree with you on name recognition. When I tell people that I am going to Vassar they either say they’ve never heard of it or are extremely impressed. However, I would say that most people I have told do know of the school. If someone has never heard of Vassar, I could care less.

You’re not the only one - it definitely bothers me too.
However, every time that I get frustrated it about, I just remind myself that Vassar’s an amazing college, whether or not people know about it.

Also, I figure that the name recognition will happen once it actually would be helpful, i.e. grad school and careers.

That’s what I keep telling myself… I guess it has a good reputation where it matters, but because it’s not really as famous as Princeton/Yale/Harvard/Stanford there’s also the advantage of not having people apply there who are just going for the name.

There was a rumor at school that I got into Yale and Brown. I told people I actually got into Vassar. Then they were like, “Ohh…” It irked me a little bit, but I just remind myself of how awesome being a Brewer is. :]

I’m just sick of everyone saying “Isn’t Vassar a girls school?”
No one knows about it in my school, but I’d prefer that to going to a school like Penn State where everyone knows someone who is going and had an “awesome time.” Brewerssss.

I get that “girl school” thing too.

i get that a lot too. not a lot of people from the south have heard of it, but i like to think of vassar college as a nice little secret that only the educated seem to know about. i guess it makes a neat little litmus test when meeting new people.

I get the same “Never heard of it,” “oh…” and “isn’t that a girls school?” comments as well. Though, I believe in the adult college-educated world, as opposed to the petty high school one, Vassar’s name carries significant weight.

Ann Hathaway and Ethan from Survivor! Alums. Awesome school. But I admit, I also thought it was an all-girls school before I got educated. :)

Anne Hathaway actually transferred to NYU
