I’m currently a senior in high school here in India and I was planning to apply to Haverford College as a student athlete and a prospective recruit. I plan to major in Economics
Few of the primary questions I had in mind were:
What are the future job prospects after an economics major in Haverford?
Is it possible to major in mathematical economics at Haverford? If so, is it a STEM program?
Given that Haverford is a top Liberal Arts College, what is the general reputation of it in the corporate world in America?
As you probably know, this decision to commit to a college is crucial for me, and It would really be helpful if someone could offer an insight into these questions that I had.
Well, let’s start with the fact that it is not that easy for international students to gain admission to a college or university of Haverford’s caliber, the main problem being the availability of financial aid. Unless you are from an incredibly wealthy family, an athletic hook is one of the few real advantages an intel may have available to them in getting admitted.
That being said, it bears repeating that small schools (relative to places like Harvard, Yale or Princeton) may not be known to the general public but have enormous reputations among the ruling elites (or, what passes for them in America, e.g. Wall Street, academia and, perhaps, the entertainment industry.) So, yes. With proper advising at the career counseling level, it is perfectly possible to find a job with a Haverford degree in Economics.
I think at most places similar to Haverford, a major in mathematical economics would still be considered a form of economics, not a STEM major.
