Haverford vs Amherst—Premed, Undergrad Research Opportunities, Student Life

@squashaddict, of course, academics comes first, at both schools! Just didn’t know if you knew how rich the area around Hford is with squash opportunities.

Hey guys, just letting you know—I chose Haverford! Thanks for all the advice!

You turned down Amherst, whaaaaat???

Congrats, @squashaddict! Wishing you 4 wonderful years as a Ford! You’ll look better rocking red and black than purple.

But it’s Amherst, America’s finest and top LAC! I’m about to weep.

Well, there’s a midwestern kid who wants to be premed and turned down WashU for UCLA full pay… (moniker is Claudacious if you want to check). And the difference in learning conditions and budget are way larger than between Amherst and Haverford.

And there’s the Hford Honor Code, and Quaker tradition. Haverford is a school of inquisitive kids who are not jostling to get to Wall Street. Amherst is ranked higher, but as a professor who has looked at the faculty at both schools in a variety of departments, my own view is that there is no discernible difference in the quality of the faculty between those two schools. It comes down to feel, and fit. Congrats to the OP for making his choice.

You made a great choice, squashaddict. Congrats!

Again, thank you guys SO much for helping me trust my gut. I really think I made the right choice!!!

Congrats @squashaddict! You made an excellent choice

Haverford is an awesome school, congrats!

Haverford is an excellent choice - the difference in academics is negligible but the atmosphere/environment are very different. You chose the right fit over rankings, and that’s to be commended in addition to having such a great choice. Congratulations!

I followed your thread, @squashaddict, but didn’t comment because I thought the opportunities for you at both colleges would be about equally excellent. A difference in feel between the colleges is there, however, and I’m glad you were able pick up on that and align it with your priorities. Congratulations on your decision.
