Having similar story for common app essay...

ok, I was reading some good college essays online and I found out there was someone who wrote something that I happened to me as well, so I thought I could write about this experience for my common app personal statement. I wrote every single word on my own but the essential idea is the same and the story is kinda the same (it’s not a unique experience, it’s like something that might happen to a lot people). Is it okay to do so? Will I get caught by college admissions?

guys, please give me some suggestions. I really need help. Thanks!!

You’re a 17 year old like most of the other kids applying. The odds are decent that the experiences you’ve shared probably have a lot in common with some of our peers.

What makes your essay unique is your perspective on what happened. So, sure, maybe your essay is on being cut from a team as a freshman and working your tush off to make JV as a sophomore… lots of essays on that theme. What sets yours apart is what you’ve learned from it.

If you can find a unique experience, great. That will keep you from being “one of the essays on not making the basketball team.” But if not, there’s nothing to get “caught” for-- as long as your essay is yours.

And, just as a FYI-- your 1st post was at 12:40 am Eastern Time. Your second was as 2:55 am. Sorry, but I was fast asleep-- I’m up at 5 am to get ready for work. (It’s 5:32 am in NY now.) That might explain the lack of immediate replies.

Thank you so much. That’s really helpful
