My s also heard in October. Very relieving to know he wouldn’t be living in the basement the following year :)

S applied scea mid October and despite some glitches (ACT or Tulane losing an entire batch of the June act scores, finding/misplacing/finding counselor recs and seeing the status switch from “complete” to “still missing items” at least half a dozen times) His best guess is that the application was complete 10/12 - whew! Now anxiously (obsessively?) checking the website hourly for an admission decision. Thought he would have heard by now. He doesn’t have the strongest app/stats though:
3.2 uw gpa
31act
sports and an after school job but not much more in the way of ec’s
summer program @ Ivy with college credit and decent grade

I know he has good recs from counselors and teachers, applying from a powerhouse private school with an excellent rep vis-a-vis Tulane.

He struggled with a major depression all of sophomore year and half of junior year and this was referenced appropriately by gc.

Visited Tulane, went to local reception, sent thank you note expressing his desire for Tulane and has a few letters from trustees (no idea how much that helps, if at all).

I am worried that he will be disappointed and have been trying to gently encourage other schools - what are your thoughts out there? Particularly fallenchemist (are you sure you don’t work for Tulane?)

3bysmom - LOL, yes, I am sure. Although would love it if they would pay me something. Maybe I should say Yes, I do work for Tulane they just don’t know it and don’t pay me! Just a very loyal alum lucky enough to have a daughter who is now a student there and loving it as well.

Obviously your son has a bit of a complicated history, so guessing on his admittance prospects is a bit tough. Certainly a decent ACT score, GPA a bit low but explainable, and sounds like a very competitive high school. My own guess is he will get in, especially if the depression has been completely dealt with and his grades show the upward trend that would go along with that. You don’t say anything about AP’s or the like, so hard to judge.

As far as other schools, there are many fine schools that he might really like. I will assume he is looking for something along the same size as Tulane, similar suburban setting? Maybe if you could PM me some details of his preferences and your thoughts about the kind of setting where he would be happy (also geographic preferences or areas he absolutely does not want to be) that would be useful.

FC, sent you a pm (I think!) did it go through?

To 3bysmom: my son got in last year with both the exact same act score and same uw gpa from a very competitive public high school (voted #1 in the state) along with a $17, 000 per year scholarship so based on that he should be fine. Best of luck!

Thank you, I will share that with him - might take some of the edge off waiting!

this is a silly question, but since we are checking the website about a million times an hour - will we see something in the personal announcements section or do you have to click through to the my application tab?

I had to click over to the application tab.

Curse that extra 2 seconds! lol

…and are people finding that they post at any particular time (ie 5:00, first thing in am, middle of the night)?

The Gibson website has said all my materials are present for three weeks now but my parents got a letter dated October 23rd saying my high school transcript wasn’t in yet???

we got that too but it was a mistake (actually a friend’s got the letter even after he had been accepted!) I think it was a mass mailing. the admissions office seems like it is having some issues with materials management!

I was just accepted today and was constantly checking my application status all day. At around 1 i check and there wasnt an answer and then at like 120 i got my acceptance under application status. There arent any personal announcements. i think they update the website right when you become accepted. I would check between the hours of the admissions office. (8pm-5pm?..tulane is a different time zone though)

Accepted!!! Yes! It took exactly 2 weeks from the day my app. was completed.

Thanks, fallenchemist. Would you suggest getting in contact with Dr. Luongo before May 1st, or would that be overstepping some boundary? Tulane is definitely the school I want to go to, but at the same time I want to maximize my chances for the honors program. My brother tells me the Butler dorms are nicer dorms and filled with similarly motivated students.

I would at least wait until after they have your grades from this semester. If they are strong, once you know they have them an e-mail would be OK. He might want to wait and see how many students that were extended an offer to the Honors Program accept, but I am only guessing. I cannot see how a polite e-mail, based on new information (your 1st semester grades) can hurt.

My D is in Butler, and I would say your brother is half right. Not sure I would say they are nicer, although they are fine. But the students are more similar in their academic seriousness, for sure. Not that they aren’t fun, but it does tend to be not based so much on drinking, etc.

Got accepted today (Saturday)!!! So it was posted defintiely after business hours Friday. Thrilled! Now waiting to hear about $$$$$$$$. Would that info have been on the Status check or will it be in the mail?

$$$ isn’t posted on the website. Will have to wait for letter in snail mail.

I’ll admit I applied to Tulane mostly because it was a good school and had rolling decisions, so I’d hear back from them soon and would hopefully know I at least got into college.

Since I’ve applied though (and have been subsequently admitted), I’ve actually become quite smitten. Funny how you can spend so much time elaborately planning what you’re future is going to be, and have it uprooted in a month or so. haha

Ceteris paribus, if I don’t get into my early decision reach school, I may very well end up here. =)

Jack - have you visited both your reach school and Tulane? I highly recommend that before you make any final decisions. I don’t say that just hoping you will be even more “smitten” (I like that) with Tulane, but as an objective piece of advice for any student making one of the most important decisions of their lives. Arrange to stay for at least 2 days and an overnight, if you can.

I haven’t visited Tulane yet, so that’ll be the next big test. I’ve visited a few schools that I’ve loved, and a few that I’ve removed from consideration after visiting (most common reason for that, so far, is sterility of the campus).

As far as non-academic considerations, most of the other schools I had been considering (that I could get in) are in Boston (BU, Northeastern, etc.).

I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I really don’t think I want to go to school in Boston. It’s a great college city, but I live 30 mins away! I know the city! I’ll know too many people in the area! My parents will be 30 mins away! And as much as I love my family and friends, I think an important part of growing up and going to college is to get away from that (at least for me). Meeting new people, not being able to go home to mom and dad for laundry, experiencing a new part of the country, etc…

So I don’t know, I’ll be giving everything a lot of thought. haha
