Having troubles with Andover essay

Hey guys,

I'm having troubles with the Andover Multiple Choice Essay.

Personally, I think all the choices but A are a bit naive and somewhat abstract, or they are "pick me because I'm really creative and have a big imagination" if you prefer.

No offense to all that selected those topics.

So my picky personality left me with choice A, which is a bit broad. I have been sitting down for quiet some time to brainstorm; that, however, has gotten me NOWHERE.

Anyone have any advice or idea?

Anything would be very much appreciated. :)

@jerryeps,
I’m doing Andover’s essay. If you can’t think of something that you are no longer certain of, do choice C. I would say choice C is the next “serious”. After that, choice E would be great. PA’s motto is “Non Sibi” and they would LOVE it if you wrote something about service. I’m writing for answer A right now. I’m a bit like you, I like to write about “serious” stuff. My SPS essay was about success, I haven’t picked any of the risky quirky essays. Good luck though and remember that Andover’s application is due two weeks later than the rest of them so don’t worry if you can’t think of anything now!

I dislike the fact that everyone thinks that these essays are supposed to be serious and should follow a strictly 5 paragraph, with a certain amount of sentences per paragraph format. It’s obvious that the admission officers judge the essays based on writing skills but they are looking more so for the person behind the application. They want to see what excites you, what makes your skin crawl, basically what makes you the unique person that you are. The essays (and interview) give you a space to differentiate yourself from all of the other students with straight As, 85%+ SSATs, excellent ECs, and great recommendations. Infuse your personality into your essays, they don’t want to read all “serious” essays.

Edit: I read my post for a second time and it gave off a really negative vibe. I’m just trying to say don’t feel obligated to write a serious essay or one you think will cater to the admission’s office ideal of the perfect essay. Have fun writing the essay and stay true to yourself.

HAHA @ifax108
I love how you are on the same page as me! Good to hear, I shall start writing my Andover one’s soon and good thing I know my choice is backed up by someone else!

My school is currently working on a very serious essay exam and I have been practicing every day and I’m used to writing 5 para 3 page 7 sentence essays. I’m actually having fun brainstorming already! Thanks very much for your advice. I feel more confident about my essays now!

Ugh. I can’t think of anything to write for my essays. Every time I start, I can never think of anything to write. It’s so frustrating!

Please tell me all of you guys ARE NOT applying for 11th grade!!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I want to be the only one applying for that grade so I can get accepted…

Phillips Academy Andover is my obsession. I have been waiting TWO years for this opportunity and I realllyyyyyyyyy do NOT want to miss it!

obviously you will NOT be the only one. 90% of the people applying have never even seen this website.

FarisM- Actually, Andover isn’t 100% going to accept you even if you are the only one applying. You have almost the same chance (maybe a bit higher) if you’re the only one applying than if other people are applying too.

FarisM,

Sorry to say this, but you’re not the only one applying for 11th grade. PA is one of the most popular schools out there so you can be sure many other students are applying. I’m applying too, so fingers crossed!
