I was wondering if anyone has used the Hazlewood-Legacy Act to pay for their tuition? How does it work? I'm trying to figure out if you send in the forms and they automatically give the exemption, or if you have to pay for it first and then they credit your account back. Any information would be helpful!

Go to the VA office on campus and they should have the forms there and give you more detail… I am using my GI bill right now but am going to have to use the Hazlewood act for part of my last year.

hey I just saw that you’re using the g.i. bill. My dad gave me a year of his gi bill and i was just wondering what I can expect to get. I know I get 100% of the benefits since hes been in the military for 20+ years. But like is the process of getting it rigorous?

to get it started it can be a pain… tuition had never been a problem for me but getting the BAH started with the post 11 gi bill is a pain . Mine had a lag of a few months at first

My D is using the Hazlewood grant. It is very easy once you get the paperwork in. Call the registrar and they will get you to the right department. You do not have to pay any tuition…they simply credit your account. It’s a wonderful benefit and has saved our family alot of monry this year! We are more than thankful!

Y’all may know, but for any other readers, the Hazlewood Exemption is NOT a VA education benefit. It is a program of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board -it provides an exemption from tuition and the majority of fees available to Texas Veterans (Tx listed on DD214 as home of record or place of entry) and/or their children (up to 150 hrs). Here is some general information: [FINANCIAL AID: Exemptions and Waivers](http://finaid.utexas.edu/sources/waivers.html) and link to the forms: [College For All Texans: Military: Exemptions for Texas Veterans (Hazlewood Exemption)](http://www.collegeforalltexans.com/apps/financialaid/tofa2.cfm?ID=500)

Although they can be combined in some cases, Hazlewood eligibility generally kicks in after VA education benefits are exhausted. Here is UT info about both: [Veteran Certification | Registrar | University of Texas at Austin](http://registrar.utexas.edu/students/cert/vetn/)

My dad was a texas veteran during Vietnam, he never went to college and never used any school benefits. Will I be eligible to se his hours through the hazelwood legacy act? Does it only cover tuition or does it cover fees as well?

Robert…call the resgistrar’s office at UT tomorrow and talk to them… they will e-mail you the forms that you need to fill out. It is a great benefit! It covers tuition and most fees, however it doesnt cover things like the All Sports Pass or your room and board. You shoudl also google Hazlewood Act and you can find out if you are eligible. Your dad had to have enlisted in Texas and was honorably discharged to be eligible.
