And here he goes again... So my DS did not get into the Academy the first go around. On March 24 he got the news but was not so sad as he was awarded the NROTC scholarship. Little did I know the deeper plan that was already in place. All along during the first journey he said he was ready to be denied but had it in his head to re-apply. The day he got his letter from the Academy he was right on the phone. He called his BGO to get some advise and then he called his advisor at the Academy to discuss his record. It was confirmed that he was triple qualified and that there no negative aspects of his application and to change nothing if he were to re-apply. They did however say to add anything that he won or earned. They went on to say that because of how he did on the ACT he did not need to take them over. They also said that because he was awarded the NROTC it will help a great deal as long as he did well in class.

Back in April he applied to apply. In early May we went to his choice school for NROTC which he loved and at the same time he went to introduce himself to the NROTC unit. While at the unit he let them know he would re-apply to the Academy. They supported his decision. Last week his BGO got in tough with him, this week he got his letters of rec from his math and english teacher. The other day he went to guidance and explained what he was doing and that he would need his high school sent again. Today he started his MOC applications. I stopped and told him he was a madman he said that he just wanted to have everything as far along as possible before he went off to college.

No need to retake the ACT...
No need for DoDMERB...
Experienced it once...we shall see where this goes.

Good luck to all that are going through this the first time.

Good luck to your son! Statistically he will supposedly have a much higher chance of receiving an Appointment as a re-applicant. The MOCs and the USNA love persistence and the obvious desire to attend. Bit of advice - as a freshman in a civilian college your son should consider taking classes that are as similar as possible to those he would take as a plebe at the USNA (Calc, physics, chemistry, English) This will help demonstrate that he would do well at the USNA if awarded an Appointment and can handle the course load…

Good Luck again!

Thank you Aglages…

He will not have much of any other options with his class make-up other than what you noted, he is an electrial engineering major. Adding to that is the mandatory NROTC classes. During orientation his NROTC LT. freshman advisor as well as his normal college advisor sit with him to make sure he is set-up for the classes he needs.

One of the upsides to his class make-up is having several classes from high school that the University said they would take for his electives, I think he has between 4 and 6 classes that roll over. His two AP classes will also be taken. He does not have to take any foreign languages. He had 4 years of Spanish (5 counting 8th grade) and he tested out! He would not have to take Cal 1 again but he wants to do it anyway and not get shell shocked by Cal 2 right out of the gate. His stronger area of understanding is chem and physics. Although these classes will be much harder in college he is confident.

Excellent avatar, I’m a fan!

Congrats again 3unitsIlove! I was going to recommend that he not take advanced classes (like Calc2)…at least during the first semester. GPA is more important than testing yourself if you are attempting to make yourself attractive to the USNA while a freshman in college. Plus, when he receives his Appointment and reports, the USNA will test him and may decide to put him in Calc2 again or even the next higher class that EEs need to take…regardless of what credits he already has. I think the next math class is equations something or the other. BTW - my son is an EE major at USAFA (senior) and you are correct…your son’s freshman classes as an EE major are very similar to what he would take academically at USNA.

Thanks for the compliment on my avatar. I hope you aren’t overly surprised to find out that I don’t really look like Clint.

Naaaa, I always envision Carrie Underwood; hoping for the best ya know…LOL!!

I am wiling to bet that even if he goes through all this he will once again want to start right along with everybody else. That is unless they force it upon him. He likes strong grades and if by the time this all comes around again if he were to go through Cal 1 & 2 again at the Academy it will be a benefit.

Please give my best to your son.
