Head Start for High School Students who want to Pursue a Science Major

Since starting high school I have become increasingly interested with biology and the breakthroughs in genetics. I want to take this curiosity further and see if I can participate in a program or research that can provide more depth and give me extracurricular experiences for college applications. Unfortunately I’m running into dead ends in my search; The programs are too far from my location so there is transportation issues (California state), they are too expensive, or are only offered to students from families with specific incomes. Almost all are only for juniors and seniors or people above the age of 16 and i’m neither yet. Even just googling “research opportunities in my area/ school level” has given me nothing.

The more I see students getting involved, the more I want to try it out. Please help. Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Take a typical college-prep curriculum in high school including biology, chemistry, physics for your sciences, and math through at least precalculus (calculus if it is available to you), without coming up short on English, history / social studies, foreign language, and art.

I’d study math, statistics and computer science to include database structures and programming.
