I do think his headshots are great but there are many many other great photographers for similar prices and quality if Philly is not convenient for you. Not sure what geographical area you would be looking in. Then again, if there is a large group of you from school who are interested, it never hurts to ask if he’d be willing to come out and do a deal for you at your school or at his studio. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I don’t personally know him at all so I have no clue how possible some sort of arrangment is. Lets us know what you decide.

One helpful way to find a headshot photographer is to go onto the Reproductions website and they have a section strictly for headshot photographers. You can click to see a bit of their work and if you like it, go onto the photographers website.

Your first set of headshots are generally not your best so I wouldn’t spend a lot on them, but they should look professional. Also, NY and LA have different styles for headshots, I’m guessing Philadelphia is similar to NY. The most important thing to remember about headshots is that the best are not necessarily the ones that make you look prettiest (or most handsome) but the ones that show your character and personality the best. It’s a hard thing to accept and choose but it really does work best for casting directors.

A director told my D that the headshot the want the headshot to answer the question, “Do I want to work with this person?” We’ve found that a very good way to look at them. It’s not about beauty, but rather is this person interesting, sincere, fun, serious about their work - any or all of the above. They want to know from the headshot that you are worth hiring, and that you know who you are. When you come in, you have to resemble the headshot, in looks, personality and attitude (not duplicate it - that is different).

We have a tight schedule during the week in NYC, so my D wants to do headshots there. I wanted to go to Philadelphia since this place is highly recommended but she seems to be sure another place will do. She says it is more important when you start your carrier but not that much when you apply to the colleges. Hopefully, she knows what she does. Thank you for the advise anyway, we may go back there later!

notactingmom, your D is right that it’s not as important for colleges. But something to think of: the headshot she uses for college applications will presumably be the same one she uses while in college. That may be fine if she’s just using it internally, within the college. But some colleges have opportunities to audition outside, in connected professional theaters, and of course some kids choose to audition outside. So if you’re going to do a headshot, you may as well do it right. But do bear in mind, though, that NYC is about the most expensive place to get head shots. We’re talking hundreds of dollars difference between NYC and Philly. The cost of Sirochman in Philly without make up and hair is $275. If you have a choice between NYC and Philly, Philly would save you quite a bit of money. I mean, if you’re a professional actor on B’way or in film, it might be worth it to spend the $800-$1000 for really top quality head shots in NYC. But for ‘regular’ young aspiring actors in a BFA program the difference in cost is something to think about.

notactingmom - you should definitely look at the Reproductions website and browse the headshot photographers on it, you will find what you like aesthetically and what you need financially. Good luck!

Connections-- thank you! I will tell my D, she may want to travel to Phil later by herself. It’s me who has just one week in NYC, she stays.

amtc-- thank you for the advise! I looked at this site, it’s so interesting! Especially some videos of young actors. God, it’s not easy to act! You actually can see the difference between a so-so and a better one, even though I am a nobody in this business with zero experience! I guess it takes seconds for the auditioners to evaluate the kids and decide if he/she suits for them or not. I hope my D knows what she is doing.
