Do you need to pay health insurance through the university? Or can you supplement what you already have?

From UNC’s website: <a href=“Mandatory Student Health Insurance (Hard Waiver Process) - Campus Health”>http://campushealth.unc.edu/charges-and-insurance/insurance/mandatory-student-health-insurance-hard-waiver-process.html

All eligible students enrolled in the UNC System Colleges and Universities, including UNC-Chapel Hill, are required to have health insurance coverage. The UNC System endorses a cost-effective Student Health Insurance Plan that covers most health care expenses not included in the Campus Health Fee. This plan is administered by Blue Cross / Blue Shield of North Carolina called Student Blue. You may wish to view a brief presentation detailing the plan and cost savings.

Each semester the Student Health Insurance (insurance premium) is added to all eligible students’ University accounts. Eligible students must enroll to activate their insurance or complete the online waiver process with their own creditable insurance coverage before the deadline each semester. Once the waiver is verified and approved, the premium will be credited to the student’s account.

Depending on your medical needs, I would check out the NC policy before finalizing your decision. In our case, the policy almost pays for itself due to what it saves us.
