Due to the personal circumstances, I lost my health Insurance from the private company. I've heard that some colleges offer their own health insurance to students; does the UM offer one as well? I feel like it would be better to sign up for the college's insurance. Does the tuition cover the health insurance? If so, are we automatically registered for one?

Yes, U of M offers health insurance but it’s rather expensive. <a href=“Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan (DSHIP) 2022-23 | University Health Service”>http://www.uhs.umich.edu/dship (that’s for this year)

It is not covered by tuition but the student health fee is which means you can use a lot of services for free. You’re required to have insurance though.

If you’re a student and a Michigan resident, you may qualify for Medicaid or heavily subsidized insurance through the Healthcare Market. I’d explore those possibilities before getting U of M’s plan in order to get the best rates. If you’re an OOS student, you’re probably going to have to get the Aetna plan linked above.

That is disappointing to hear I’m an OOS student from NY. Do you think it would be better for me to just join my parent’s plan or sign up for the Aetna plan you mentioned?

That’s going to depend on your parent’s insurance. Most plans don’t cover anything for out of state other than emergency visits. You need to talk to your parents and compare the two plans to see which one is better for you.
