HealthyHabits - Food Tips (2021 and beyond)

Sure, I can do some fresh fruit… very much looking forward to that treat in Hawaii. (My A1C is borderline into pre-diabetic, but my PCP is not nearly as concerned as the sub I saw for a physical a few years). Especially if I have not had two donuts for breakfast ;).

I’ can’t get excited over the Cold Stone ice cream shop that was highly touted in the hotel video. It’s a splurge I can do a few miles from home. Shaved ice sounds good though!

I’m playing 4 hours of bridge today, I only bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch plus an apple, so I did a strawberry, orange, yogurt, parsley, collard greens smoothie for fiber, it’s good to drink some yogurt because I don’t like to eat yogurt, parsley and collard greens are from my garden, this is how I can guarantee that they are organic because I maintain a no spray garden for years. Eating more greens is good for my eye health, this is most important to me as I age. If I can’t see my flowers and their color I wouldn’t be too happy.

I am having bariatric surgery and need to find a protein shake and a protein powder. There are so many options that it is confusing. Does anyone have a brand that they like? I need 20 grams of protein/5 or less sugar and 250 or less calories.

appreciate your thoughts!

No suggestions on the protein powder but wanted to wish you the best on your surgery!

I like Tara’s Whey. 20g protein, 2g sugar, 110 calories. I buy the bourbon vanilla.

I’m not a protein shake or powder person. I eat more than enough protein just by eating eggs, poultry, fish, tofu, meat, yogurt, etc.

But, there are SO many different types or sources of protein shakes and powder: hemp, rice, soy, whey, dairy, pea, etc. And I also personally don’t like preservatives, additives, sugar and sugar alternatives (stevia, sucralose, etc).

The choices can be overwhelming, but I would choose one where there’s just a few basic natural ingredients. Sweetness can be added via honey or even 100% maple syrup, in very small amounts. Thus, I’d look for one with no sweeteners, if those even exist. :slightly_smiling_face: Again, I haven’t checked the market out.

Some of the Vega products might work for you. There’s an unflavored unsweetened powder that could be customized into a shake. I like their products but given how specific your nutritional requirements are you’d have to explore all their options to be certain.

I use Orgain protein powder (vegan) every morning in a smoothie w/frozen berries and ice and almond milk (choc flavored powder). It’s delicious!

thank you! I appreciate the good wishes:)

Thank you for the recommendation. I had seen Tara’s Whey when I was googling around and was hoping for a review. Do you purchase it online? I was hoping to buy a few different options and test them out prior to my surgery.

that is the information that I am finding regarding protein shakes and powder.

Thank you! Orgain and Tara’s Whey are the 2 that I keep seeing information about.

Looking for a healthy salad dressing. I don’t like a lot of dressing anyway, but it’s the last really processed thing I eat on the regular. Happy to take bottled suggestions or yummy recipes I can make at home.

Most days for lunch I have Dole’s Sunflower Crunch kit. Or a Caesar salad. Both with grilled chicken. So something that would be yummy with Romaine and grilled chicken. TIA

I am a fan of TJ’s Organic Balsamic and Fig dressing. It has a perfect balance of sweetness (figs and honey) and acidity.

Oh, that looks like something I’d like. Have you tried TJ’s olive and fig crackers? My DIL turned me on to them. Yum!

I get it at Whole Foods so you can get it on Amazon.

I just make a simple mustard vinaigrette for that type of salad. Here’s a good one:

That looks good. How long will it store? Could I make a week’s worth at a time?

Honestly I make a batch and keep it on my counter for a few days. If I were to make a big jar full I’d probs put it on the fridge. It’ll stay for a while but you’ll need to take it out to come to room temp or warm under hot water because the oil will solidify.

I make a simple dressing:

1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
S&P

Mix all ingredients in a jar with lid and shake vigorously. Keeps in the fridge for a week (or more).
