Hear an NPR story about Swarthmore Football

"Weekend Edition - Saturday, December 9, 2000 · Swarthmore College announced it will discontinue football program. Scott speaks with Greg Kannerstein, director of athletics at Haverford College, Swarthmore's rival."

Sounds very NPR-ish. Quaker rivalry and all....it seems that Swat beat the heck out of Haverford before football was eliminated. And it said nothing about the other issues - just that the college was "trying to concentrate on other sports".

Not in football. Haverford dumped its football program 30 years ago.

It does crack me up that the Swarthmore students voted many years ago to use the name "Garnet Tide" for their athletic teams, a vote intended to be an ironic play on the then dominant football program in the country, Bear Bryant's "Crimson Tide".

Yes, you are right!! It ways with the elimination of football, some of those football slots for admissions will be allocated to the other sports and "Swarthmore being such a good team" (Wow, I did not know that!!), then they present a greater challenge to Haverford.
