I have some concern that if only Freshmen Presidential Scholars are in the Village this year’s NMF’s will have to move into a double Quad next year after living in the Village this year. If my daughter did not have the housing allowance then I would easily move her off-campus sophomore year as it would be cheaper without the housing scholarship. She does understand that she might be in a double Quad room next year and will accept it, but I do think it will be a bad PR move on Auburn’s part.

Our daughter is not a Presidential/NMF - is in Honors, and got in Aubie. Her deposits were sent in early October. There was a slip included in her packet which clearly stated that do not assume that being in the Village this year will mean they will be in it next year. She does not have housing included in her scholarship so this is not a concern, but I understand where it is for those that get used to the luxury of the Village.

I am also concerned about this, especially because of the housing allowance. I have heard that one can find much better (bigger) housing off-campus for the same price as on-campus. If Aubie (honors) is only available to us during freshman year, I might look into off-campus housing during my second year. While I would hate to give up the housing allowance, I would probably be inclined to do this if I can find a decent job and reasonably priced place.

I agree with you, Proud_Mom. It would have been better to have the crummy housing for the first year, and then head to nicer housing as my daughter got older. They probably thought that they would lose kids to Alabama by not offering it the first year. It will be an interesting conversation next summer to see where all of our kids end up for year 2.

my son was in aubie hall last year. absolutley loved it! he was in a business learning community. also a talon scholar. he and his roommates signed up for the village for this coming school year. made sure they were early on all deadlines. found out in late march that they would not be able to stay in the village. since their foursome really bonded, they didn’t want to split up. also, moving to a double room after being in a paradise dorm was not an attractive option. so they are headed off campus. unfortunately, since they found out so late that they would not be able to stay in the village, all the 4 bedroom apartments walking distance from campus were all snatched up. So they will be off campus in a student apartment, but more than 2 miles to campus. so enjoy the village this year, it may be your only year there!

sherigmom: I know there are some buildings in the Village for non-honors students. Maybe next year they will put the sophomore and up NMF’s in one of those buildings. I would be interested to know what happened with last year’s NMF’s regarding housing. Maybe that is why bluemath’s child and other non NMF’s had to move out of the Village: to make room for older NMF’s.

I did ask housing about this at CWE and was told they are trying to figure something out and discussions about it have been going on. I really would think that sophomore and older NMF’s would get housing priority because part of their recruiting scholarship is based on housing reimbursement, although I know the contract doesn’t guarantee where they will be placed.

Did Bluemath ever mention whether his/her son was a NMF? I really don’t know what constitutes a Talon Scholar.

I really hope they are trying to resolve this issue. It kind of sucks to have to have to kick students out after only one year of living in the Village. Personally, I believe that reserving 3 buildings for sororities only is a bit too much.

In my perfect world, there would be 2 reserved for honors. One for incoming freshman and another for returning honors students (priority for Presidential students).

Just curious- Mine will apply this August- she is not Honors and I think will request the Quad- what are her chances-

hlsess: I don’t think anyone can give you an answer to “what are her chances”, as it will depend on when she submits her housing application and deposit and the school’s needs for that year’s incoming group of students. To give her the best odds, she needs to apply and pay the housing deposit as soon as she is accepted to the school.

Student10: I have made the assumption that Bluemath’s son is not a NMF because it wasn’t mentioned and I also have no idea what a Talon Scholar is.

The three buildings for sororities are for profit.

I also like your idea to have two buildings in the Village for Honor’s students. Now, nothing against non-NMF’s honor’s students, but the NMF’s are courted with the promise of on-campus housing reimbursement and if NMF’s decide to move off campus because they have to go from the Village to the Quad then I can see getting upset because if they choose to move off campus they lose a good chunk of their scholarship. I am sure the Quad is nice, but going from having your own room to sharing a room is a big deal.

Anyway, as I told my daughter, who could have chosen the University of Alabama, she will have to accept whatever housing arrangement they assign her. I hope she will always have a place in the Villages, but if not, she will have to deal with it.

I also anticipate a smaller number of Presidential Scholars in two years as they have cut the scholarship from full tuition and fees to 2/3 tuition and fees for 2011-12 freshmen.

Better yet, if the university can’t simply provide NMFs with the best housing for four years, why not allow them to take that housing allowance somewhere else?

Again, in my perfect world, separate two buildings for honors in the village. Otherwise, in the case that the university is not able to keep a NMF in the Village, allow him/her to spend that housing money somewhere else.

Wish the world was perfect.

proud_mom:
You are right, that’s bound to decrease the number of Presidential Scholars attending the University. Has the NMF award also been affected?

We plan to put our housing deposit down ASAP

As of now, the NMF award for the 2011-12 applicants is the same as this year’s incoming class. I don’t think it will change as they appear to be in competition with UA for NMF, but if the economy continues to worsen, who knows.

son is not a nmf. he has heritage scholarship, 2/3 tuition discount. decided last minute not to do the honors college. was concerned with GPA requirement to keep scholarship. your kids will love the village! on move in day they actually have porters with rolling racks helping you get all your stuff to your room.

my suitemate called me last night (we had requested each other) to let me know we made it into Aubie in the village (the honors dorm)
we will be joined by 2 other girls who I had already met on facebook and in a surprising turn we will now all be living together. It’ll be an interesting mix of 2 FL girls, 1 TX girl, and 1 NC girl.

August 7th get her faster please!

my son will also be in aubie and we’re from atlanta. not surprisingly, he also has suitemates from TX and FL (and one from AL). i think the mix is good, too.

are you getting a loft?

I’m happy we’re not all from AL or GA. We all seem to get along really well, and I like them all thus far.

I got bed risers…haven’t really decided if I’ll be using them or not.
What about your son?
