Heart of Darkness

Who else has had the displeasure of reading this book? So many people rave about it but I found it incredibly hard to get through, and I often found myself losing my spot a lot because it was just so boring.

Terrible, terrible book.
I was supposed to read it for a class last semester. I couldn’t get through it for the life of me. It was so dull and racist and just BAD. Ugh.

Joseph Conrad’s books = history book in amount of boredom.

I read Nostromo which is about 500 pages of Conrad…and I don’t know how I survived…Now I’m going to try to read Secret Agent by him…wish me luck even though I’m bringing this upon myself?

(haven’t read heart of darkness yet though…it seems worse than Nostromo even though it’s shorter)

it was an irritating read, but it’s really great for AP lit free responses! the themes tie in with everything.

I have to do this for IB English next year. I didn’t think it would be that bad, but everyone’s opinions are making me worried…

I forced myself to read it for the sake of reading it.

^ What she said. I forced myself to read it, quit halfway, pulled up the Cliffnotes and Sparknotes version, and got a 90 on my test.

I hated reading this book. Does ANYONE actually ENJOY it?

I liked it…
It was a challenge to get through, but the symbolism and imperialist themes were really interesting. But of course I used Sparknotes. And aced the test.

Can’t say I remember the story, but it isn’t the best book I read by far. Is it the one with Legatt? Ship Captains?

^ It’s the one where Marlow (a sailor/shipman) goes into the heart of the African Congo in order to retrieve an ailing Kurtz, whose entire character consists more of a presence through myth and “words” (as Marlow called it) than his actual, physical self. The novella predominantly explores themes of race relations, imperialism, sanity, and identity.

The first half was awfully boring. The second half, when they finally get to the Inner Station with Kurtz, gets more interesting. In terms of enjoyment, I thought it was a lot of build up for a pretty good ending (although it really wasn’t worth all that extra time). I’ll probably use it in the exam, though.

I’m getting flamed, but I enjoyed reading it, but maybe I loved the movie based on it, the amazing “Apocalypse Now”.

However annoying and uninteresting it seemed at times, I enjoyed it for some reason…

It was definitely less interesting than the movie, LOL.

I thought it was flat and unidirectional. A case of the pot calling the kettle black, I suppose :S

History book > Conrad in amount of boredom. I had a good history book ;)

I LOVE THAT BOOK. I chose it to write a 30-page term paper on it. Fun stuff!

Which would have been longer than the book. :P

Well, double-spaced…

Come on!! The book wasn’t THAT bad :p. Although I didn’t like Apocalypse Now that much.

…compared to Republic by Plato, Conrad’s other works, and War and Peace (actually war and peace isn’t that bad, it’s just the length)…Heart of Darkeness is not that bad…

But still

history book > heart of darkness

Half the fun in Reading Heart of Darkness is getting to the inner station. Wait, make that 2/3rds.

I think I’m going to start reading this after I finish Ulysses.
