Heat wave and no air-conditioning!!!!!

I just really need to rant, i understand that the buildings are historical sites and what not, but come on, is central air really going to screw up the buildings? NO! It is 99 degrees in cambridge right now and all i have is a fan that blows hot air at you. This is not just uncomfortable, but is a health hazard! I can't even bring in a portable. They won't let me!

Last time i am staying during the summer semester.

I bet dartmouth has air-conditioning, heck even yale probably has them

Buy a window AC. It’s technically not allowed (like microwaves), but I used one the summer I stayed for PRISE and no one cared.

Take a look at that :

And theres one method that is not explained on this site, that is to have a bucket full of cold water/ice, then a fan somewhere near it. Then theres something with a large copper wire going in the bucket, and fixing it on the fan… but I can’t remember it exactly, and I can’t find on the net.

Swineflu- I highly doubt Yale or Dartmouth has AC in the dorms. Princeton does not. A fan and a spray bottle of water will help. Aren’t your classrooms and library air-conditioned? All you need to do is sleep in the dorm room.

When I first read this, I thought “You go to Harvard, don’t complain.”

Ha! I do feel you, though.

Second the suggestions above, plus always make sure you’re fully hydrated! :stuck_out_tongue: For those who are wondering about the heat wave, here’s an article from National Geographic that may be of interest to you:

Here’s an obvious solution:

A/C is not a Boston-area norm. I just got back from Germany where they’re having an unusual heat wave with daily highs in the 90s, and I never found A/C in any of the hotels at which I stayed.

I would really expect a place like Harvard (with an endowment around $20 billion) to provide air conditioners, but I guess you should just live with it. Think about it: what did we do before air conditioners were invented?

fauve: Whitman and Butler both have air conditioning.

fauve: At Princeton, Butler and Whitman both have air conditioning.

I went to Duke years ago. There was no AC there (at least at that time) and NC is a lot hotter than Boston.

No AC is the risk of any summer program.

D did a Marine science program that about 15 girls bunked in one room. I don’t remember any fan even.

The next year, she attended a drum major camp. She was on about the 15 floor. No AC and I don’t recall if the window opened.

An interesting product. We looked into these for a cooling need in our house. They are not particularly well reviewed. If anyone is contemplating one, I would do some thorough research.

We killed ourselves. And hey, Northwestern has air conditioned dorms. Gotta love it.

Natim- Thanks for the correction. Amazing they put AC in the new colleges–lucky Butler and Whitman residents!

^Yeah, Whitman and Butler are awesome residential colleges. I loved them. :)

And OP, was going to a museum or library out of the question? I find that going to such places is a good way to get out of the heat.

Some of the Harvard quad houses might have AC (Currier??)…

That’s gotta be new. I did CTD summer program at NU 5 & 6 years ago and we just broiled in the heat. No AC at that time–at least in the dorms we used. =(

Good thought - the Quad was originally Radcliffe housing, so the facilities there have a number of amenities that Harvard apparently thought the macho men in the River Houses wouldn’t need. I wonder if the College could open up some optional temporary sleeping accommodations in an A/C’d location while the heat wave plays out?

they just told us to stay in the libraries as much as we can. The science library is usually open til midnight, but my preferred library, lamont, closes at 10. :(
