Hebrew

Has anyone tried to learn hebrew? Self study hebrew, I mean. Its not like I'm looking for a perfect score on the subject test, its definitely not about that. My reason for wanting to learn hebrew is that I've recently started to go to synagogue, and its really hard for me to read the translation and transliteration at the same time. Solution: learn hebrew. hehe...

At the same time, would be nice to take the subject test too! And to gain some proficiency, if not in speaking then at least in reading.

So any advice? Tips? Realistic expectations? Review Books?

I see no one has answered you, so I might as well post what I know...

The best way to learn Hebrew is from someone who speaks it. If you're going to a sunagogue, you can ask around if there are any Israelis there who can help you (since the test is for modern Hebrew, and what Jewish folk in the states usually learn is a somewhat more archaic form of the language).

Another good way, if you already have a basic knowlege of the language, is to read books you know and love in their Hebrew translation.

If you want, I can help with questions you might have (vocabulary, grammar etc), seeing as I myself am Israeli.

However, I can't offer to tutor you since I don't actually live in the U.S :P
