Hey guys! I'm marjoring in Chemical Engineering (2nd year). And i failed 3 of my 5 midterms!! I guess i'll end up getting a 70/100 for the average. I know this is way too low for med school..

My friends (premed students as well) told me that i can change my major to Maths which im kinda better at (i got 98 in College Calculus but i dont like upper year courses). Well the problem is I have to be a full time student for medical school right? And right now i have 2 pt jobs to pay for the tuitions. Plus i am my 11 year old brother's guardian. It's a lot of work and responsibilities but i really want to go to medicine!

Or do i take a year off to get everything settled?

Do you guys think i still have a chance to get accepted by whatever med school? Please dont say no..

How about the MCAT? Volunteer in Africa? Research jobs?

Thank you guys!

Maybe you shouldn’t major in Chem E or math. What else do you like?

Wow…that’s a lot of responsibility. I hope you’re getting gov’t financial help for that.

You are taking a lot on as your load and I think you’re awesome! I hate seeing people who only go to school (they don’t work and have no real responsibility) whine about school. I envy them, and I am sure you do too… at least in regards to their lack of responsibility outside of school.

Coming from someone who wasn’t able to start college until she was 22 because of family issues, I think you should take a break and get things settled. I am doing very well in school because I am not as swamped as you but I couldn’t imagine doing what I am doing if I started right after high school. It would have been too much.

It’s probably not what you want to hear, but I think it’ll help you a lot. Plus, when the med schools ask you why, you can tell them what happened. It’s not like you partied too much, you had to live and take care of your brother. I think you should take a year off, maybe find some volunteer thing you can do for like 8 hours a week or something, catch up on some concepts that were difficult, etc. You can do it!

For the other poster, financial aid doesn’t pay for much when you don’t just have to live. Trust me. If you have to pay for other stuff, it sucks. I get the most I can get with financial aid (without having to pay back anything until after school) and I get some scholarships but I still have work 30 hours a week because of things I have to pay for and it’s very stressful. I get about 5 hours a sleep on a good night.
