I was wondering if anyone would like to critique my portfolio. It's semi-rough and still in progress. I'm looking into applying to schools such as cooper union and SAIC. I am not sure if they are reaches, or matches. My GPA is a 3.8 and I will be transferring from a community college. Also, suggestions for match schools would be greatly appreciated. I am majoring in painting.

Nice portraits. Did you look at Bowling Greenin OH, Grand Valley in MI, Alfred in NY, all safety but also great fit for your art. Also, do go to the National Portfolio day. One at SAIC Oct 14, 2007. They will critique and provide recommendations on your portofolio to present to their school. Cooper Union will be there.

definitely attend NPD. I just attended one in Cleveland today! And it was great. Good feedback and I wonderfully enough received an Approval from SAIC! which means you don't have to re-submit your portfolio!

Thanks everyone for your input. I am planning on attending the NPD. I went when I was a freshman in H.S. The last one I went to was very helpful, hopefully this one will be too. I would love to go to Parsons, but the main reason I am allowing myself to consider Cooper is because of the full tuition scholarship. Otherwise, I am probably going to have to stay local (near, or in IL).

Tuition free does not mean free. You need to plan on spending at least 20K per year for room, board, books, and art supplies. Plus NYC is just plain expensive. If you are in Illinois, have you looked into the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana. I have heard that they are considered to be a good school for art and design.

Have to agree with unsoccermom. Plan for at least $20K for the 9 month school year.

Also go in to the process with a realistic approach. I think they accept about 75 kids for art, and the at home test is a ton of work. Also plan on sending in a current sketchbook. Cooper Union for art is a reach for anyone.

I applied to cooper union, (rejected) but if I had to do my application process again I wouldn't bother applying. Their "test" takes a lot of time away that could be spend working on other applications, and even if I got accepted I probably wouldn't go. The school is free, but they OWN you. They're not just a school, you have to join their silly union. They make their students work way too hard also.

Your portfolio is nice, but a bit monotonous. Put in some more things besides portraits, but make sure they are done well, don't just stick some random ceramic bowl in there. Art schools want people who challenge themselves. If you want more in depth critiques this is a good site for that if you haven't heard of it already http://www.conceptart.org You'll get much better feedback than what you will find at deviantart.
