For FAFSA --- When an adult child age 23 and his three children move back home with his parents, but he receives about $200 in unemployment, can the parents add four more to the number in the household? It is also complicated by time spilt between visiting their mother.

The household already consists of two parents, one independent (24) in college, one dependent (19) in college. So we believe the household is consider three as one is considered independent (correct?) but does the addition of the brother and his three kids add to the family?

If you are the primary supporter, then go ahead and claim them.

Are you providing more than HALF of the support for this 23 year old? If so, I believe you can claim him/her as a member of your household. If not…then no. Is that $200 a week in unemployment? If so…seems like he’d be providing more than half of his support.

The parents make $85,000 or so and the unemployment for one year would be $12,000 est, so it does not seem possible that he could support himself and three children. It is confusing. The dependent sister has an efc of 7311 if four are claimed and still can not get a subsidized loan.

Is it possible in the above situation that the father is caring for himself but the grandparents are providing for the grandchildren in term of number in household? If daycare expense were being paid rather then just provided for, the grandparents would be providing quite a bit but I guess we are talking about actual money spent when they ask, Did you provide more than half the expenses?
