After getting a 161 on my PSAT, I've decided that I need to improve my score.

I got all the needed material, the BB, and Direct Hits Volume I&II. It's my junior year so my schedule is going to be quite tricky. I start school at 7 and end at 4. This is my plan... to study from 4-5 every day the following sections:

Critical Reading on Monday, Writing on Tuesday, Studying Vocab. words on Wednesday(50 words?), Math on Thursdays, a break on Friday, and then doing practice tests on Saturday. Now I'm wondering just how effective of a plan this would be. Would this give me enough preparation time for the SAT test in March, June?

Also, if you guys want to share, how did you study for the SAT and how well did you do?

I’m not studying a great deal. I’m at the 2350+ level, and I’m aiming for 2400. My weak spot is in CR, thus I me studying vocab and practicing Passages(usually I get 0-1 Passage questions wrong, but yesterday I got 6 of them wrong, so I’m a little more cautious). I’m trying to tweak my essay writing so I can get a 12(and thus a -1=800 buffer for an oversight in my Grammar Nazism). Math is straigtforward for me; I just have to remember to check my work for stupid mistakes(such as missing the word “even” in “consecutive even integers”)

I would recommend doing 2-3 sections of a practice test each day, full test on weekend if that’s not what you already mean by “study.” As for words, I used to study whenever I had free time during school. I mean waiting for the bus, during the bus ride, free periods, during “review” or whenever the teacher goes over something I already know. Your main score increase won’t come from vocab, so I wouldn’t devote a whole day to it.

Breaks are okay, I mean if you’re comfortable with it (GUILT). I have to take a break on Mondays by necessity, since my school + EC goes from 7-11 PM on Mondays, and there’s hw.

EDIT:
I might also mention my scores. 203 sophomore PSAT, winged it
Then I studied during sophomore-junior summer and a little during September (3 months), and October SAT 2210, October PSAT (junior) 226.

So was that how you studied, by doing 2-3 sections of a practice test each day? Did you use the actual BB or other resources like Kaplans? Thanks for the reply by the way, I need all the help I can get at the moment!

You should use BB whenever you can, since their tests are closer to the real one. The next best I think is Princeton Review. I’ve heard that Kaplan is much easier than the real SAT.

Take FULL advantage of this summer. That is your time to really devote your full attention to the SAT. Of course, keep working at it during the school year, but breaks, long weekends, holidays, and summer are the times where you can really do some hardcore prep.

I had prep classes for a while (I don’t believe they’re totally necessary for a good score but they brought my score up into a competitive level) but I think the most important thing I did before taking the Nov '10 SAT was studying rigorously for six weeks.
I’m not good at keeping plans since I know I won’t adhere to them but I sacrificed a lot of sleep for those six weeks. I would study, usually, from 11pm-1am, just focusing on whatever I felt necessary.
I would take random sections in a BB test or study vocabulary. I found the BB a bit fun actually; it was like a game to me, a way to see how well I could do on CR, W, or M.
I also only used BB; no PR, Kaplan’s, or Barron’s for me… just the BB.

In the end, it’s your choice whether to take a break on Friday or not, but my conscience wouldn’t let me take one lol. As the previous user said, I felt sorta guilty by taking breaks here and there. On the real SAT, I received anywhere from 2290-2350 Sorry, I don’t feel comfortable revealing my score.

If anything, definitely take advantage of weekends. Best of luck to you!!
