Hi. I go to a school which is supposed to be famous for its academic excellence. I always wanted to go to yale or cornell or stanford. However my school doesn't even offer ap classes. The only thing that reassures me is that on the colleve admissions some people went to Columbia cornell and stan and places like nyu st.johns and Amherst. What can I do to make up for those ap classes? I think I can take college courses and take the ap test but im not sure if that's possible. Please give me all the information you can and I will gladly accept your help. Thank you!

Hey there!

You can DEFINITELY take AP tests without taking AP classes! I recommend doing some research, picking up some AP prep books from your local bookstore, and maybe trying to find an AP test prep group or tutor if possible. My college roommate had the same situation in high school (school offered no APs), so she hunkered down, found a teacher to help her prepare, and taught herself all the extra material and exam formatting she’d need to do well.

In addition, something to note: when colleges are reviewing your application, they can see how many honors/AP classes your school offers, and they keep that in mind. So, they’re not basing your application on how hard your course load was compared to everyone else (some schools offer 20-30+ APs, others offer none); they’re basing it on just your school alone.

If you’re worried about not having AP tests on your transcript, look into other areas of your application that can shine. Have an interest in English but didn’t take either English AP? Try writing for some school publications or other journalism endeavors instead. Remember: most schools (especially the types of school you’re talking about) are very holistic in their college processes, so they will take EVERYTHING about your application into account!

Hope this helps! If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to ask!
