Hi everyone,
I just applied to Berkeley as an intending social sciences, arts, or humanities major… BUT I want to major in Business. I know that I need to apply during frehsmen (if admitted) but I heard that I should have applied from now as a PreBusiness major. I checked over 100 times and I couldnt find that major on the UC Application. So I just submitted it as an intending social science major. I tried calling but they’re so busy. Were you guys able to find the pre business undeclared major on your UC application? How does this affect their decision? Can I still take Business courses in freshmen and apply to Haas? Please help me im freaking out.
Hi Confused,
Don’t panic. Don’t panic even a little bit. Switching majors isn’t difficult.
This is from UCB faq:
Q: Can I change the major (and/or college/school) I applied for at Berkeley?
A: To change a major/college/school in your submitted Berkeley application, you need to email us with the following information: full name (UC application); UC application number; college/major applied; college/major requested.
NOTE: You must use the same email address as you listed in your submitted UC application. Email your request to: application@berkeley.edu
You can expect a decision via email within 5-7 business days.
That being said. Definitely wait until you’re accepted, and then switch. Social science is less impacted than Business.
@EssayEnthusiast I am sure that freshmen does not declare until end of freshmen year? You can just switch within same college or even different college quite easily with high GPA except into engineering. I might be wrong , but I think that is the case.
Okay great thanks guys! But the thing is, I wanted to apply to the Pre Business major that everyone was talking about, but I couldn’t find it. Does that major even exist for freshmen students? Also, will they take into account the fact that I don’t have a very strong social science base? I think im a more suitable business applicant due to my ECs. Anywayss thanks a lot for your help. @EssayEnthusiast @boomboom123
L&S frosh all enter undeclared, so it really does not matter if you applying for frosh admission to L&S.
It may matter in terms of what type of advising you get at orientation if you eventually do attend.
The business major only admits students who will be juniors. Students who want to major in business complete the prerequisites and apply in their second year.
@ucbalumnus Do you know what UCB future Business majors usually enter as in Freshmen? I don’t want to take too many social science courses in freshmen.
Most aspiring business majors enter as L&S undeclared. I.e. just like you will be if you are admitted and decide to attend.
Because business is a competitive admission major, aspiring business majors should take prerequisites for other major(s) of interest as well as business, in case they do not get into the business major. Economics is a common alternate major, although that major requires a 3.0 GPA in its prerequisites to declare (most L&S majors just require passing the prerequisites, although some are at full capacity and require higher GPAs, like computer science, statistics, and psychology).
@ucbalumnus I am actually quite interested in the business school as well. I am planning to do CS mix Busin. So I apply to HAS at the end of my freshman year? If I am planning to go to HAS, the best thing I can do now is to try my best to get in Berkeley? Or does the application for Business school require your high school grades/ EC/ and test scores?
Admission to the business major for students at Berkeley is described here:

Admission to the business major for students applying to transfer to Berkeley as juniors is described here:

The business major at Berkeley does not admit frosh, and does not require high school stuff (other than such things as AP scores optionally used to fulfill certain requirements).
