So I grew up in business. My mum is a share trader and economists and my dad is an entrepreneur. All my life I thought I wanted to be in business - wether that’s an entrepreneur (I am one now), economist, investment banker or in the hedge funds. But recently, I’ve been interested in cosmetic dermatology. The problem with me is that there is so many things I want to do. I want to be everything…and I don’t know what I want to be now.
**please ignore grammar and spelling errors - my keyboard isn’t working and i need to click all the keys virtually.
Ok, so i’m from australia and i want to go to america to study. but if i were to do medicine i would need to sit the mcat and in aus the umat. That’s so much study. espesh with the act and exams here.
What do i do???
My entire application is about being an entrepreneur but i also have a blog where i write about skincare. i know that if i were a derm i would eventually hone in on my entrepreneurship and start my own pratice like - david colbert. but then again, the mcat and umat. and i don’t wanna study physics in high school. it’s seriously difficult in australia.
sorry for typing like this, i never ever talk or write like this but my keyboard doesn’t work .
Pursuing medicine is a huge academic, financial & personal commitment. If u are wishy washy about it then it’s probably not for u.
You don’t need to be a medical doctor to market skincare treatment.
how can i market skin care treatment? u mean like starting own skin care line???
It’s extremely difficult for non-US citizens/non- US green card holders to gain a medical school seat in the US. Fewer than 200 internationals are admitted to all US med schools combined in a given year. (And most of those are Canadians because their government provides education loans to its citizens attending US med schools.)
Additionally, there is little to no financial aid to help pay for medical school. You and your family would need to show you have the financial means to pay before you’s be allowed to matriculate. In total, you’d need $300-400K to pay for med school. Unless you have that kind of $$$–stay in Australia for your medical education.
Lastly, medicine in the US is a post-graduate program. You would first need to complete 4 years of undergraduate education, then apply for med school, which is another 4 years and then medical residency training (another 3-10 years) before you would be able to practice medicine. American students don’t take the MCAT until near the end of undergrad.
BTW, if you intend to go back and practice medicine in Australia, you would need to be have to re-qualify your US credentials and spend at least 2-3 years working in the public hospital system as a generalist under supervision before you could apply for a specialty.
Yeah, it’s a guarantee that David Colbert (whom I have never heard of but googled after you mentioned) did not develop and launch his skin care line entirely on his own. He may be the face/name/brand of the line, but there’s a whole team ranging from R&D to marketing involved with making those products available. If what you really want is to be an entrepreneur rather than someone sitting in exam rooms meticulously looking over every inch of a naked person’s body (aka being a dermatologist), you don’t need to attend medical school - in fact medical education will largely be a waste of time.
