Help Calm My Nerves!

Tomorrow is my last day to deliberate about my college decision. I’m leaning heavily towards Mizzou’s J-School, but quite frankly am a little bit nervous about it. Granted, this may just be a normal case of nerves that would surround this kind of major life decision, but any reassurance would be awesome. I was hoping I could get some insight into a few things:

Honors Program:
I read the honors thread on this forum and it seemed extremely divided. Up until reading that, I had heard such great things about the honors program. This is pretty important to me as the academics outsid of the J-school are a bit of a concern to me. Now, I have my doubts even about the honors program. Any thoughts on this?

Mark Twain/Honors FIGs:
I am tentatively enlisted in an Honors Journalism FIG in Mark Twain. Again, I had heard only good things until reading the views of some students in another thread on here. How do people feel about these?

Out of Staters?
How have any out of state kids adjusted to Mizzou? Being from New York, Missouri seems light years away.

Please just feel free to share any general thoughts/experiences regarding Mizzou, the J-School, Residence Life, Social Life, Parties, etc. I would really like to have some idea about what Mizzou life will be like before I sign my soul away lol

Read the rest of my replies through out this board! I’ve touched on just about everything that you’ve brought up and would write it out again…but I’m taking a study break and just don’t have the time :)

You will not make a mistake choosing Mizzou especially if you want to do journalism.

The Honors College will only enhance your experience here. There are no negatives to it, and it’s relatively easy to qualify for. Take advantage of your resources!

Other gen ed classes can be easy if you want them to be. If you want to challenge yourself and take harder classes, you can do that too. There are so many options here because this is such a big school. There are honors sections of basically everything and you can get a lot of pre reqs out of the way quickly. Mizzou’s academics aren’t highly regarded on a national level, but I promise you will be as challenged as you want to be.

FIGs are a great way for out of staters to meet new friends and for freshmen to adjust to life on this relatively large campus. I am a huge proponent of the FIG program, but must admit that I didn’t fully realize how incredibly helpful it was until I was out of the program. At the time, it was tedious. Looking back, everything we did was quite necessary. Again, can’t go wrong.

Twain always gets mixed reviews. It just depends on your personality. My best friend lived there when we were freshmen and I loved hanging out there. Some of my friends live there now and have a great time because they’ve formed such a tight knit little family on their floor. It’s all about what you make it.

Other than that, college life here is great. Parties are awesome. Athletics are so much fun to be a part of. Columbia is a great midwestern college town. The vibe of the campus is laid back and enjoyable.

You won’t be ruining your life if you decide to come here. Quite the contrary, actually. Mizzou was my last choice, “i swear I’m not going there EVER” safety a few years ago…and now I cannot picture myself anywhere else. It’s incredible. It’s becoming my home. If you’ve visited here, perhaps you have an idea what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, get out here! You’ll love it.
