Hi guys. I am currently a sophomore from New York and I am wondering about which colleges with a CS major I would be able to get into. I have a 3.5 UW GPA and a 3.8 weighted GPA. I took the SAT this year and received a 1820 and I will take it again next year hoping to get 1900+. I am a black male and my freshman year classes were
Honors Geometry with a B-(the main reason for my low GPA)
English Language Arts 9 A,
Honors Biology B+,
Spanish 2 A-,
Social Studies Global 1 A,
Computer Science 1 and 2 A+.
Sophomore classes
Algebra 2/Trig so far with an A+,
Chemistry A-,
Spanish 3 B,
Honors World History 2 A+,
English 10 A-,
Computer Graphics/Web Design A+.
Next year im planning on taking
Honors US History,
AP Computer Science,
Honors Pre Cal,
Physics,
English 11 or maybe AP lit.
Class rank is 100 out of 480. The price of the school isnt a problem. Thanks.
Also I forgot to put my ECs. I am currently Vice President of Radio Club and will probably be President next year. I have played in the band both years and for community service I currently have 20 hours volunteering at an animal shelter and this summer I will be volunteering at a library helping them with their computer problems.
Are you really wealthy enough that price doesnt matter? What type of school are you looking for? Any restrictions on location? I think if you can keep up high math grades from now on some good schools for you would be UIUC, UMaryland College Park, Rutgers, Purdue, UMASS Amherst, Tufts, SUNY Binghamton, tufts, BU, northeastern… it’s hard to say without any more restrictions
There arent any restrictions on location and price isnt a problem.
Bump
There are thousands of schools in the US… it will help if you can share some preferences if you have any…
(1) Do you care whether the school is urban/city? Suburban? Town? Country/rural?
(2) Do you have a preference for geographical area?
(3) Do you have a preference for large research universities vs. medium/small universities vs. smaller colleges?
- I would prefer city or suburban but thats not a breaking point.
- I would prefer the Midwest, Northeast, and the Southeast.
- I would prefer to have over 1k students at the college.
And thank you for your response.
That does not narrow things down too much.
Suggestion: Use the College Match software on this website. Use the preferences to get some ideas.
Then, track down a copy of Rugg’s Guide, probably available with your Guidance Counsellor at school. Take a look at the Tier I and Tier II schools for undergraduate CS, and then compare those rankings with the schools that came up on your college match. There should be some overlap, and those would be a good start to begin the process.
Visit some schools over the next 2 years, before you actually have to apply, and try and do those visits while school is in session, to get a better feel for the school and its academics.
That should get you headed in the right direction.
Good luck!
