Today at 5:13 pm in Fairfield University
Hi guys I need help ASAP! I have been accepted to both Fairfield and Conn and both gave me a $20,000 scholarship. They’re around the same cost and I would be going in as undecided. I really need help choosing one and I don’t know what to do. If someone can help please do!!!
I’d suggest you visit both during accepted students day and make a decision. Think about some of the differences such as do you like the large core curriculum at Fairfield: do you prefer a Jesuit or non-sectarian school, location preference to name a few.
Thank you for your advice! I visited both and I will be going back again for accepted students day. My main concerns for Conn is its small population, although a pro to that is it means a small teacher to student ratio. Another is whether I will fit in or not…I feel like a majority who go are boarding school kids (which is not me). My concerns for Fairfield is its small campus with a larger number of students (around 5,000)…it seems just a little cramped in me. And I wonder if I will be getting my moneys worth for both schools…Conn is a well-known school but Fairfield seems to offer better programs…??? I’m just very confused.
We were just at Fairfield last week and it was surprisingly bigger than we thought. They are also building a brand new business building and just completed a new nursing building and parking garage. I have also heard the trust fund kids thing but everyone I know who has been accepted are all hard working middle/upper middle class students from public school. I do think U Conn may be more diverse and the sports culture may foster more school spirit but my son likes small schools in small quaint towns.
In general, the caliber of students at Conn College will be higher and you may find more intellectual challenge there. Fairfield will have more pre professional programs, Conn College, a true liberal arts feel.
Conn College is a step up academically, and a draws a more diverse and national student body.
What is your intended major and what type of students are you most comfortable with? Connecticut College is more preppy, and my friend’s daughter said very cliquish. There is diversity among the students in the form of geography. The location is a bit isolated and New London does not offer a great deal. Fordham is also preppy but not the same level, more commuter students, location in Fairfield and easy access by rail to NYC. If you are unfamiliar with the Jesuit philosophy and education, take a few minutes to read about it. Neither school is generally well known outside of the tri-state area. Make a list of pros and cons of each school after you visit accepted students days. Where can you see yourself living for 4 years, what values will you be exposed to that will shape your future path, what group of students will you be able to bond with, what is the depth of the courses are offered in your anticipated major, what school offers the strongest career counseling and internship possibilities, what is the professor/mentor relationships in both schools. They are both great choices, congratulations on the acceptances and scholarships.
If you want to go into a pre-professional school with a bigger emphasis on sports - Fairfield is for you
Conn is more for exploring liberal arts and has more of a challenging academic environment. Conn also attracts more of a diverse student body and is a harder school to get into.
