I'm trying to decide where to apply EA: Chicago + Georgetown SFS, or Yale SCEA. I'm interested in international relations, most of the social sciences, and philosophy; I'm really considering working as a correspondent after graduation. Yale is my first choice right now for many reasons (including the EP&E program), but I also LOVE Chicago, and Georgetown SFS would be great for my interests.

If applying to two schools I would be happy to attend is significantly safer than applying only to my dream school in the early round, then it seems the former would be a better option. I'm applying to good safeties regardless, but it would still be nice to get in somewhere I especially like EA.

Unfortunately relevant factor: My parents are REALLY Asian, so Yale is by far the path of least resistance. Ehhh.

Taking everything into account, what do you guys think? Is Yale SCEA too much of a risk compared to Chicago + Georgetown + Possibly Other Schools? Considering my other options, is SCEA at my dream school ultimately not worth it? Thanks in advance.

Invoyable, how are you so confident it will only result in a deferral. I'm asking not to criticize you, but because I'm stuck in the same situation as sartorialiste. As of now, I've made up my mind to apply EA to Chicago and Gtown(arts and sciences). But if it will definitely result in a deferral......

I never claimed anything of the kind, so stop putting words in my mouth...I said something along the sorts of If he is competitive and has a pretty good chance at Yale, then he would be better off in applying, since his first choice is Yale anyways. Of course if you know you don't have any chance why would you apply.

I'm a she! (hence the e at the end of my username) :)

The reason why it's kind of hard for me right now is Chicago + Georgetown are both really good options. Yale is my top choice, but I wouldn't say it's my top choice by far. It's overwhelmingly easier in terms of parental support, I'll admit; but when it comes to the school itself, I do like it best but not by leaps and bounds. I wasn't considering Georgetown before for various reasons but I've changed my mind due to SFS, so while I was thinking Yale over just Chicago or maybe Chicago + MIT, Chicago + Georgetown is attractive (and potentially feasible) enough for me to be reconsidering right now.

Hawkphoenix, what factors led to your decision? Just wondering.

Well, now I'm starting to question my decision. But I made it on the grounds that I don't have any outstanding stats or ECs. I'm a standard applicant with good scores, decent ECs, etc. So I felt I would have a better shot at Gtown and UChicago than at Yale.

I'd say go Yale SCEA since it's your first choice. This is especially so because you only have two other schools you listed that you will have to forfeit to the RD round.
If you were giving up maybe 4 or 5 other EA schools it would be different.

To the OP: if you EA Gtown and Chgo, you'll have in hand this December a combination of admit/defer/reject from these two. Then you'll finish off your Yale app and submit it. Come April, you'll have admit/defer/reject from all three and then have to choose (hopefully).

If you applied SCEA to Yale and they admitted you in December, would you not apply to GTown and Chgo? If Y did admit you, would you feel better by applying RD to GTown and Chgo just to use the final few months to decide if either of them admit you?

My thinking is apply to Yale (regardless of family pressures or urgings). If it's your no. one come this fall, then definitely so. Anderson Cooper, Yale '89 emerged from Y w/o much direction. Decided to go overseas and be a reporter. Now lookit 'im. LOL

He's a nice guy. Dry wit, very funny. I've had a few beers w/him...

T26E4, I would probably file my Chicago application before I hear from Yale since it's always been high up on my list, but Georgetown maybe not.

I think I've decided to just go ahead with Yale SCEA and try to have the best application I can come November, with a good mix of schools RD. Should I wait for my Yale decision before submitting RD apps, though, or should I send them in before December?
