applied into UT as a non-auto and got admitted nov 19 for fall 2021. For reference I have a feeling race might have helped me, my parents are middle eastern immigrants and on coalition when i selected white, there were 2 options: middle eastern or european. also i mentioned how my heritage contributed to my identity as an american in my essay, plan 2 loved it when they zoomed me! Said they were excited to include diverse students. In any case, I think hispanic will help you for sure since they are UR and Middle easterns traditionally get high stats comparable to asian (wealth disparities, im not saying ME’s are smarter than hispanics but traditionally they have higher incomes than them), but i dont think putting multiraced would hurt u at all if you include context somewhere else on ur application
i was admitted outside of top 10 percent, my school only ranks the top 10, i estimate i was top 20%, i see that ur applying to UT austin and UT is very selective with admissions outside of top 6 percent. In my essay I described the responsibilities I had to do as the oldest daughter of an immigrant middle eastern mom (i translated for her, helped her with her business, etc.) described how it made me view things from multiple aspects rather than just one
wow ok i seem to be in the exact same position you are in. Im top 17% ish right now, i also have a grandma with Alzheimers and during corona i’ve had to take care of her and teach my sister at the same time (who is 11) while my parents were away at work because they are both essential workers. I have learning/mental disabilities such as ADHD and i’ve learned to overcome it. Both of my parents are immigrants that came to America in search of a better life and a good education for their kids. I grew up with racism and have dealt with adversity because i was a minority.
Do you think this Is a strong essay?
A little bit of background about me and what i plan to major it:
I am interested in computer science…i had an internship at a major website building company OWDT.com they’ve worked with notable companies such as Forbes, NRG, etc.
When i was in 8th grade in the summer transitioning into being a Freshman in High School. I’m currently taking AP Computer Science and i have a really high average in the class. (95)
Sorry for cramming all that, its just a basic summary of what i plan to write and since you got accepted into the school i really want to go to i thought id get some advice from you
if you are in-state, (texas), you have a great chance, i have adhd but never mentioned it in my essay, but i understand how much struggle it is to focus in class with ir. If u wrote it in a way that showed how you grew from ur circumstances, that will help u definitly. If you applied to mccombs, cockrell, or cs however, i will not sugercoat: its very difficult as a non-auto. Saying that, my chances for ut was as little as 5 percent according to websites i used but still got in from my essay and decent ec’s! you never know with admissions
Yes i live in Houston, what did you get on your SAT’s? Honestly i have really good grades but my sat scores are incredibly low and i’ve been working like crazy to get it up but right now im struggling like crazy
This is a quandary that many mixed race people face. What are you when the world wants to put you into a box? My daughters are mixed and have been raised identifying as Latinx. It is woven into their daily lives of who they believe themselves to be. They are also fluent in Spanish and that helps them dispute the naysayers of why they do or don’t fall into other’s ideas of what they should look like.
Mr Meddy was raised with a strong ties to his Scandinavian family and their traditions. This richness was folded into my daughter’s lives as well, but some will say they do not look like that side of their family either and this language never made it to this country, let alone their generation.
The internal and external voices weigh in loudly when these questions come up. Speak of the fullness of who you are. Be authentic! This is what makes you interesting and your story compelling to the eyes reading it. Don’t check boxes or write what you think will get you in. Trust the process that you will wind up where you are meant to be when you are genuine and put your all into it. Write what shows them why you would make a wonderful citizen, excellent and interesting student who will thrive on their campus. And remember-
“To thine own self be true.” I wish you the very best!
That is because A, it is White as defined by federal guidelines, and B, there is a continuum from Europe to the Middle East, without any clear boundaries between the Europe and Middle East.
Culture, ethnicity, and genetics have had a steady flow between Europe and the Middle East ever since humans emerged from Africa. There is no real way to separate these.
