I've gotten a bunch of different answers about what race to put for apps, so I figured I'd ask CC for some input!

I was born in the Philippines and I have my citizenship there (lived there till I was 11). My great grandfather, who lived in the Philippines, is also of mixed Spanish and Mexican background, which makes me 1/8 Hispanic. I'm thinking about checking yes to the "Are you Hispanic or Latino?" question on the common app. I'm also going to check Asian-Filipino in response to the "please indicate how you identify yourself" section. Will this make any difference to adcoms or will I still be considered an ORM? Am I gonna be better off if I don't answer these questions at all?

Wow this situation is almost exactly like mine, made an account to just to ask. I think we’d still be counted under Asian

You can certainly check both. What effect, if any, this will have on your college application is a great mystery, and may vary by college. Since a college admissions officer will not tell you, it is unlikely you will get any better insight here.

Hmm but will checking both raise any suspicions? My parents have always just put down Asian but now they want me to put down Hispanic too, although I do have spanish sounding last name.

Not necessarily. There is a difference between race and ethnicity. The CA tries to make that distinction. Other forms may or may not make the distinction.

One can be Latino and be black/white/asian/aborigine, etc.
