Ummm…North Carolina is NOT all that close to NJ.

Where is your mother? Is she able to help you at all?

I’m sorry but my opinion is that IF your father is abusive, this is something that needs to be addressed ASAP. Did you have to show your essays to your high school counselor or teachers? Do you understand that they are mandatory reporters of suspected abuse. In Other words, they are required to report this to child protective services in your state.

It is possible that college adcoms are mandatory reporters of abuse to minors.

Please find a trusted adult to help you figure out what to do next.

I showed it to adults. They said they wont call authorities. And also, I know its far. But my father is letting me apply becuase its a relatively inexpensive school.

UNC Chapel Hill? Is that where you are applying? Relatively inexpensive? How do you figure!!?

The 2012-2013 cost of attendance for out of state students was almost $44,000 for the year. This year (2013-2014) it is likely a bit higher. Next year (2014-2014) when YOU would be attending…it will be higher still. So when you are a freshman, the cost for UNC-CH will be between $45k and $50k per year.

Also, they wont let me change my essay! I get an error and the support page is down! ***! Am I supposed to get caught or something?

Please…please. Find a trusted adult who can help you.

Why would your dad demand to see your CA otherwise he wouldn’t pay or file FAFSA? Why do you think he made that demand?

You need to apply to a couple of schools where you are ASSURED to get large merit. UNC and UPitt are not those schools.

“my businesses are grossing 5 figures”

If your businesses are not reliant on you being in a specific geographical region, then you can go wherever you want for college once you turn 18 and are a legal adult. Discuss that with a trusted adult as well.

P.S. just an FYI…UNC-CH requires both the FAFSA and the Profile for consideration for need based institutional financial aid. Your dad and mom would need to complete BOTH forms.

The css profile is optional…and either way I wont get any finaid. And Upitt and UNC are actually relatively cheap schools considering most schools that have my major in the area cost around 55k

According to the UNC-CH website BOTH the FAFSA and Profile MUST be submitted by the March 1 priority deadline for need based aid consideration. MUST means this is required, not optional. If you want need based aid from UNC-CH, you MUST submit both the FAFSA and the Profile.

If all you want is the Direct Loan, then all you need to submit is the FAFSA.

Also, how do you plan to get the cost of attendance down to $25,000 at UNC (COA for this school year is just over $45,000)? That would mean you are hoping for a $20,000 merit award…is that right? Their merit awards are HIGHLY competitive…just FYI.

I know, Im not banking on the fact I’ll get it. Its a you never know kind of thing…this school is not my #1 choice. I dont have one because of the price issue. And ive visited the UNC website before and it does not say you MUST submit the profile. It simply says that the css is used for state aid and fafsa is for federal. And since im in NJ im not in NC.

Temple (listed above to give full scholarships) is close to NJ- I do not know if it has your major but most kids change majors anyway!

It would be best to not be held hostage to your dad’s tuition participation. Let him play ball with reading the application (essay #2) to keep harmony- but follow your own path by paying your own way. If you have the $, you can pay your own transportation to Alabama , b/c you have a full ride. It’s an awesome school.
The scholarship schools may not be your dream schools but you will succeed and then some day be able to send your kids to their dream school. BTW- 95% of adults and your peers do not go to their dream schools and are very successful.
Good luck!

And I also have outside scholarships as well as the stafford loan, which makes it less than 10k that I need i merit, so dont assume things you dont know. And to everyone who keeps questioning my ability to pay for these schools, forget that. My dad will pay. This is just a threat that wont last very long, but I need a quick fix solution to the problem that I’m facing with my essay.

thanks @livesinnj I was considering temple too. They came to my school the other day and I will get a full ride there as well and they dont even have a supplement.

"Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) This is the federal form used nationally by all schools. This form is available at fafsa.gov.

CSS/PROFILE This form is available at profileonline.collegeboard.com. Undergraduates who choose not to submit a CSS/PROFILE application will not be considered for University scholarships and grants."

The above is right from the UNC website.

It CLEARLY says on the UNC website that undergrads who chose NOT to send the Profile will NOT be considered for any university grants or scholarships. So…if you want a grant or,scholarship from INC…the Profile is required. If ALL you want is a Direct Loan…the FAFSA will suffice.

I’m not sure I understand your issue. If your dad can and will pay, and you do not require need based aid to attend college…then what difference does it make if he completes a FAFSA…or not?

Or is he saying he won’t PAY if you don’t show him your essay?

Temple sounds like an option worth pursuing!

he said he wont pay if i dont show him or even bother filling out fafsa

How are you so certain that he will pay, given the past history of abuse that you evidently feel strongly about to write about in your college essay, and your fear of his reaction should he see your college essay?

Because he pays for my brothers although it is under 10k

But is his relationship with your brother different? If he favors your brother over you, he may be willing to pay for his college, but not yours (or threaten to not pay for yours for trivial matters). Or your brother may be completely submissive to your father, which you obviously do not want to be given the topic of your college essay.

Also, with your brother’s college being relatively low cost, he might be less willing to pay for your college if it costs him more.
