@wisteria100 no, i didn’t bother. Starting at zero, i figured i wouldn’t even call. It was pretty disappointing. My D had really worked Kenyon very hard at multiple events and had multiple conversations with the head Dean.
Seems like a lot of people in the Kenyon RD thread wound up lower than they expected/hoped (in but not merit, wait-listed, rejected but accepted to similar/higher ranked schools).
Many of the schools said they had records numbers this year (do they say that every year?). Maybe Kenyon just had a more competitive than normal year. I know they have a very small endowment, so we never really had a great feeling about getting enough money there.
Looks like we are going to cancel the MN trip and just go to Grinnell accepted students visiting day. If somehow she doesn’t like it (can’t imagine that’s not the case), we’ll maybe have to bring Dickinson, Denison and Lafayette back in the mix.
@lexluthor5, did she get the Marquis at Lafayette? That’s a pretty nice scholarship!
@LucieTheLakie Yes, Marquis Scholarship for $24K, not the larger Fellowship. Lafayette would have been nice. Less than 3 hours from home, great school and beautiful campus. She felt it’s a little too preppy and a little too sporty (they are D1). I’m sure she could have been happy there, but she’s probably right.
Grinnell sounds perfect for her, @lexluthor5. Good luck on your visit!
Grinnell, DIckinson, Denison and Lafayette all have so much going for them. Your daughter has excellent choices. When the time comes, I would be thrilled for my daughter to go to any of these schools.
@citymama9 I’m sure your daughter will have some great options. Seeing all of the great options that my daughter has in front of her makes all of the work she’s done really worth it.
Union is on the board now with their max (I think) scholarship offer of $16K. Little interest there, but they had a free application, so she submitted.
Just found out last night that Grinnell is having an accepted students program in NYC on April 5 at an art gallery in NYC. She (and maybe me too) will attend even though we are going out to Grinnell the weekend after. She thinks some people from the facebook group might be going to the NYC event, so that would be nice.http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/
Hopefully, she loves the campus and the people we meet and we return with lots of Grinnell swag
@lexluthor5: I’ve been following you here as you led us through your journey and the ups and downs with falling in love with/giving a lean-in toward schools, and it has been useful.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Kenyon, but Grinnell has left me curious from the first mailer they sent to my home a few years ago.
Have a wonderful time at both the NY event (if you go) and on campus. Congratulations to your daughter.
Have you been to Union? I was looking at their website the other day and I was really interested in the Minerva program, but I think I heard that most of the kids would rather go to Greek parties then attend events in their Minerva House. Union was a school that intrigued me and it had never been on the radar before
No visit to Union. Interest was very minimal. They only got an app because it was free. We really had no idea how the process would work out early on, so couldn’t hurt to keep the options open.
Accepted to Oberlin, but looks like no merit at all. Little surprising, but whatever. I guess that’s why she applied to a lot of schools because you not everything works out as you might think it does. Very little interest in Oberlin anyhow.
At least still a perfect acceptance rate Brown on 3/31 may very well break the streak though. Think she just wanted to see if she could get in. With no merit aid from Brown available, it’s not happening anyhow.
Counting down until our visit to Grinnell on 4/10-4/11 as well as the NYC event on 4/5.
At this point, it’d be great if we get there and she loves what she sees and commits. If not, I guess that opens the door for Dickinson, Denison and Lafayette. Not bad options to have!
Guess I was wrong on Oberlin. Their portal updated with additional award info and she was offered the John F. Oberlin scholarship for $23K/yr, plus Oberlin College Grant for $4K/yr. Very generous. Still not going though.
Just wanted to say that we saw Lafayette today, and even though it was kind of dead due to it being Easter weekend, we fell in love with the campus. Everything: architecture, trees, green spaces just meshed together perfectly. We didn’t do a tour, just wandered around ourselves. My husband preferred Lehigh, but my daughter and I thought Lafayette was perfect. (in case Grinell doesn’t work out)
@citymama. I agree about Lafayette campus. I have been twice. My son liked it too although may have preferred Lehigh (as did my H). Since Lehigh is a waitlist though the point is moot. We will be attending admitted student day at Lafayette on the 17th.
@lexluthor5 congrats on Oberlin merit. Your D has some awesome choices.
@citymama9 Did you stop by Crayola?
@OnTheBubble No Crayola pitstop lol, but I bet it’s fun. We drove to Lehigh, were in awe of all those hills (they overwhelmed me tbh), went into the student union and the library and then ate in Bethlehem where we met the most enthusiastic, friendliest girls who raved about Lehigh. We then went to Lafayette and thought we just happened upon the most perfect campus. The student union was closed today, but a security person let us in and told us to look around. Then we went home:) It was a fun day.
@momofzag I wish your son the best of luck. Lafayette was a really special campus ( I have seen many). I would love to see it again when my dd is closer to selecting schools and when there are students swarming the campus. Lehigh is lovely, but those hills!! I hope your son enjoys the admitted student’s day!!
We really liked both the Lafayette and Lehigh campuses. Very different, both beautiful in their own way. Lafayette seemed to have a central quad with most if the buildings around it. Lehigh seemed a lot more spread out and very hilly. I imagine the kids must get a pretty good workout walking around Lehigh daily. We must have seen 5 different wedding parties taking pictures the day we were there. Both also had beautiful libraries. Lafayette’s was modern and Lehigh’s was older and stately.
D was rejected from Brown. She didn’t really care too much as she knew we weren’t going to pay full boat there. So finally tally is accepted at Grinnell, Macalester, Dickinson, Denison, Kenyon, Lafayette, Oberlin, Clark, Union, Ursinus and SUNY Geneseo all with merit aid ranging from $10K-$35K, except for no aid from Kenyon and rejected by Brown.
Very interesting process and wonderful results.
We are going to a Grinnell accepted students program in NYC Tuesday and then off to Iowa next weekend to accepted students day there and to accept the campus.
She says she’s about 75% Grinnell at this point and that’s probably only because she hasn’t seen the campus yet. We expect that the campus will be as beautiful as we’ve read about/seen pictures of. Hopefully, she gets there, meets with some great people and gets the feeling that it will be home for much of the next 4 years.
