We are preparing for his meeting tomorrow. We will report to all if we get a definitive answer.

Good luck. Think positive thoughts.

“My son got a D for the spring semester in his AP physics class. He was accepted at UCSD as a Poli Sci major and we know he could be rescinded. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this? We have no idea how the decision process goes or if there is a way to mitigate the situation. Any advice?”

Your S’s guidance counselor probably has the most knowledge about what happens in this kind of situation, and how to handle it.

Our guidance counselor can barely tell you when the SAT’s are! Nice guy but not too competent and also on summer break-no help at all.

I think the argument that your S is not a science or engineering major is a good one. As a poli sci major, it would be bad if he got the D in History or English but AP Physics? If I were an admissions officer, I would let it slide.

But then, it’s not up to me. :/

I hope all goes well. I would find it hard to believe that UCSD would punish your intellectually curious son for taking what is probably the most difficult course any high school can offer when he did not have to. After all, he did pass the course and did learn some Physics which is something that can probably not be said for the other Political Science majors at UCSD.

Bump.

How did things go with the meeting with admissions? Any news, good or bad?

Just got back from his visit. He went in alone so I don’t have complete details. The meeting was largely positive. He was told that they try to be generous in these situations but it comes down to academics. They appreciated his effort to come personally and by himself. They will be averaging ALL of his grades for senior year and in his case even with the D he has a 3.6 so that was in his favor. They will get back to him later this week with a preliminary decision so we now wait. He feels much better about his chances now but we’re not off the hook yet.

Oh so good to hear that.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the final decision.

Well, it sounds like a positive development – especially the part about averaging all the grades. Plus that “preliminary decision” sounds good.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you. I do think that they probably see a lot of cases of “senioritis” and that this is a somewhat different situation, especially given the nature of the course. I hope they see things the same way – if anything, this experience might make your son a better college student, because he’s learned the hard way that he’s got to do his best to keep his grades up all along, in the even that he bombs an exam somewhere along the line.

^^Also keeping my fingers crossed, 3down - and hope your S hears good news later this week.

Sounds good–good thing he didn’t go into senior slump mode!

Great news! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him as well!

Thank you all! Well wishes are very appreciated!

Any news? Keeping my fingers crossed

No not yet-he’s going to call or email her if we don’t hear something by Wednesday.

Sorry. I’ll keep my fingers crossed some more

I know it’s late, but I hope this helps…

I got a low C/high D (our school doesn’t letter grade) in Calc this year but did not get any notice of rescinsion. Another friend going to NYU only barely passed physics. Yet another person I know got a massive scholarship to a good state university…and actually didn’t pass a class required for graduation. He’s finishing it up in summer school and will be fine though.

Crossed fingers! :)

Still no word and since we have reached the holiday I guess now we are not going to hear anything until next week. Son did say the administrator he met with had to see his official HS transcript before a final decision would be made so maybe that hasn’t been posted yet and is the hang up. Waiting is difficult!

Hang in there 3down. We are thinking about you and hoping for good news.
