Hello..I'm from Malaysia and am due to go to the States in either Fall 2005/Spring 2006 to further my studies in Medical Tech..however, as I am under a tight budget, the schools of my choice are relatively cheap ones, one of it is Louisiana Tech University. I was wondering if anyone here knows of that school and can give any comments on it..Over here in Malaysia, I've heard both good(eg. one of my college advisors said it is one of the top schools in the state of Louisiana) and not-so-good comments(eg. no one has heard of it kind of thing)..I am really in a dilemma right now as I do want to go there because of financial reasons but I am not sure if I will be compromising on my education..

One thing to keep in mind is that the U.S. has MANY colleges and universities. A lot of people haven't heard of them. Even in the States, you'll find that some colleges are only "known" to people because they play football or basketball and their games have been televised.

Louisiana Tech is not a highly ranked school nationally. That doesn't mean it's horrible, it just means it's a typical state school. I don't know where it ranks within the state of Louisiana.

My main concern for an international student would be that it's so rural, with an international population of less than 200 students. I'd worry over how good a support system you would have there. But they may be able to tell you more.

wOOT, loui......?

conservative place

Hi, thanks everyone for your opinions. Yes, i heard that louisiana is a rather conservative place to be in. That, too, makes me apprehensive abt it. I've been accepted into other so-so schools too like Winona State, St Cloud State, Wichita State but hoping to get into better ones like U of Miss and Miss State. Again, whatever I've heard abt these places are very speculative so looks like I'll have to make a choice of the best amongst the worst..haha!!
Thanks again..

A MN native here-

Choose Winona over St Cloud.

Hi Ainsley, why do you say so? just want to hear an insider's view on that..and also, is it cheap living in MN?

Winona is more reputable; St Cloud is known as the drinker's state school, to be frank. Plus, Winona has smaller class sizes and some more challenging academics. They also have lots of merit-based scholarships. (Not sure if St Cloud does).

MN housing is reasonably priced. If you're thinking of living off-campus, apartments in St Cloud and Winona should be cheap. Minneapolis and St Paul apartments cost more but aren't outrageously priced. For more info, check out real estate sites.

Good luck.
